I legit dont think anything @cgf has said is out of line here lol. Svech could very well be better than Kakko and if we had a chance to draft Kakko over Byram we damn sure would have....how much longer until the season starts?
There's a difference between saying you think he'll be better than Kakko and calling people who disagree idiots.

Yeah, I'm on board. I'm not poo-pooing Byram's potential, but everyone here is talking like he's a sure-thing Doughty level player, which is completely absurd. He could get there, but it's far from a lock.

After Sakic kicked his ass this offseason he is lost.

Lost? Completely idiotic babbling that has no relevance.

Bowen is undoubtably the best pick for the AVs @ 4th OA. Svech is the better player, but to discuss prospects from different drafts makes no sense.

Nobody (unless there are posts I can't see) was talking about Byram being the wrong pick at 4 this year. Nobody is saying they're not happy to have Byram. It's totally reasonable to discuss whether you value one player over another (i.e. "I would/wouldn't trade Byram for Svechnikov").

You just dont trade a #1 D for a winger period

I love these kind of posts.

Before the draft 90% of people didn’t know jack about Byram or were actively questioning him and now they know his projections and compare him to an absolutely brilliant talent that would be in discussion for 1st overall in Bowen’s draft year.

I didn't see any of that. Seems more like you're creating a narrative to fit your opinion.

Before the draft all I saw is top 3 players being Hughes, Kakko, Byram, and everyone covering the draft said Byram has everything to become a #1 D. I wouldn't trade that for a winger. Even if Svechnikov becomes a 60 or 70 point winger and Byram only scores 40 or so but he's a #1 D who plays in every situation, I won't trade him for Svechnikov. Wingers are a lot easier to find than #1 D

Edit: but I'm thinking Byram is gonna score more than 40 points in a season

What convinces me that Byram is the real deal is him leading scoring in the WHL playoffs. He clearly needs no more seasoning down there and he's clearly going to be an impact player. Likely more dynamic offensively than Dahlin and on par with Makar.

Byram is a great prospect no doubt. But anyone thinking he's a guaranteed #1 defenseman (or even #2 for that matter) needs to temper their expectation. He isn't better than Hughes, Kakko, or Svech, nor should the expectation be put on him that he will be.

Those players were drafted above Byram for a reason, they all have a higher ceilings and floors than Byram. He wasn't even a clear consensus to be the #3 pick over Dach and was passed over which allowed us to draft him. He can be the best player in the draft and he can be better than any player mentioned here, but to put that expectation on him is setting yourself up for disappointment.

In my very unbiased opinion, Byram's floor will be the good version of Ivan Provorov (not last year's version). His ceiling is obviously Scott Niedermayer but everyone already knows that.

Sure. This thread doesn’t have posts rabbling on about how they would not trade Byram for Svech. Posts downplaying Svech calling him a winger. Posts about Byram being a franchise D or #1D etc.

Truth is that people look at Svech’s stats, have no idea how he was used and then continue to make comparisons without knowing shit above the two. As I said, I’m probably the biggest fan of Bowen, but of Canes are dumb enough to offer Svech you trade him 12 times out of 10.

60-70 point winger?

Kid has the potential to be a better version of Tylor Hall that actually plays D.

I still wouldn't categorize Byram as a surefire #1D. His offense is very dependant on the lack of structure in junior hockey, so I think we should temper our expectations as far as that area of his game goes. Fortunately, he has a solid base of defense in his own zone to work off of, along with great skating and IQ. I still say we should expect more along the lines of prime EJ; a puck rushing defenseman who plays solid defense and can play a #1 role in a pinch, but not an ideal 1D. He'll make a perfect partner for Makar one day.

Not even what I was referring to. For the record Svech is the better young player/prospect, I don't think anybody has really questioned that outside maybe one or two posters, but more-so the want to have a stacked defense.

I love Byram and might have been his biggest cheerleader, but Svechnikov might be special. Doubt on his availability, but would not hesitate trading if he was available.
