What's even crazier is that Anaheim had Z, Lacombe, Thrun, Colangelo, and Helleson in their system at the same time. All five were part of the the 2019 WJC-20 Gold medal team USA! It's a small world, indeed. Best WJC-20 ever b/c Z pissed off all of Canada right before the USA v Canada gold medal game.
I really do wonder if Helleson was someone Madden wanted but they didn't have an extra 2nd and he wasn't there when they picked Thrun.

2019 Draft
Rd 2.
39. Ducks: LD LaCombe
47. Avs: RD Helleson
.
Rd 3. == no Ducks picks ==
.
Rd 4
104. Ducks: LD Thrun

I dunno if Helleson would have been picked b/c Helleson was selected eight picks after LaCombe. If the Ducks would have had a second 2nd round pick, then I figure it would be a later pick. The Ducks would swing for the fences in talent with a 2nd round pick on a d-man than just a shutdown guy. LaCombe and Zell are examples of swinging for the fences on talents.

For example, in Rd 2 of the 2021 draft, I thought the Ducks would have gone for RD Scott Morrow due to being a right shot, his size at 6'2, his offense, and coming from the same high school as LaCombe at SSM. Instead, the team went after the diminutive jitterbug in LD Zell. Zell can skate faster than Morrow and did show more offense at a higher level of play than a high school level. Zell went 34th and Morrow at 40th.
