I keep waiting for Cates to turn back into a pumpkin (or a good young depth player). Wouldn’t it be something if he firmly established himself as a top 6 center who is great defensively? He’s been around a point per game the last 15+ games. I doubt that keeps up but it would sure help a lot if he became a ~70 point player lol

…and MM scored

Zero chance he becomes a 70 point guy, if he rides this heater and really took the next step.... 50-55 would seem to be his absolute peak imo, which would be insanely good as a 2C. I think that lines just clicking otherworldy right now, I don't see him continuing this much longer. We can draft another Jett Luchanko, thanks to the work of that line. #halfacentury

The teams been playing strong hockey since the Christmas break.
6-1-0 with Ersson in net
0-3-2 with the other guys
Tell me you are not a little bit afraid the flyers trade for Vanacek, keep the vets and the bobbleheads will all be slobbering over a failed playoff drive.

It will never cease being weird that this was a thing that happened:

Let's see, we go to NJ, outplay them and win the game. This after we beat Florida.
"but they need to tank, no way they can play against good teams."
Well, when they get average or better goaltending, they can play against anyone.

Torts is not against cross ice passes, he is against the kind Seeler made with no player on top in case the pass is intercepted.

Flyers are as fast as NJ, and may be faster when they add Jett and Andrae.
However, only Michkov has the skill of Hughes, Bratt and Hughes.
Flyers like Sanheim and Tippett are more straight line, even TK, although he's improved, lacks great "shake and bake."
One reason I look forward to seeing Barkey next season in LHV.
When Michkov adds 10 lbs of muscle the next couple years, he's going to be a monster, right now he can still get bounced around a bit, being able to anchor better will buy him another second to make plays.

However both the Cates line and Frost line matched up well with the Hughes and Nico lines, what they lack in pure skill, they make up with speed, aggression and physicality on the forecheck.
And this might have been the best game of the season for the Couts line.

Flyers are definitely making the backdoor pass a staple of their offense, and going to the net is a priority - if you can't make the sexy plays, then grind in front of the net. While they lack size, they're quick to get there, they just lack the stick skills to convert these plays as much as they should. Learning curve.

Devils play a more structured system under Keefe, but not sure they'll go deep in the playoffs, they'll have to get tougher to do so. A team with Nico (1), Hughes (1), Hughes (4), Bratt that added Meier, Palat, Noesen, Cotter, Hamilton, Siegenthaler, Pesce, Dillon shouldn't be outplayed by the Flyers on their home ice. And can't blame Allen, neither goal was a softee.

My man thanks for the yuge sample size there
Point is they're not just beating Anaheim and San Jose.
Those close losses against good teams are becoming wins.

Now 26 games, leaders in xGF%, GF/60 at ES, still waiting for regression to the mean.
Even the PP is starting to come around, though it still looks ugly, they have scored some goals.
The PK is better recently.
But the difference between winning and losing has been the goalies.
When Ersson is playing well, they win, when the goalies are sieves, they lose.

This is all true. Goaltending is the real difference and ultimately the Carter Hart situation set this team way back. There are prospects so hopefully this improves but this team would be a playoff team with consistent good goaltending.
During the game they mentioned a stat (which I assume must be true) that Flyers have the most combined production from under 23 year olds on their roster in the NHL. Michkov skews it a little but that stat is something for the failed rebuild people to consider. Things are improving.

They have the most goals for players 25 and under.
But they do have a large 24-25 contingent, Frost, Cates, Tippett, Farabee, York, Zamula
Foerster, Brink 23
Michkov 20

Wheeler is starting his prospect countdown, at 22.
Figure Flyers will be the teens with Michkov graduating, then top 5 by winter with all their draft picks.
Bonk, Jett, Barkey, Zavragin, Knuble should be their top prospects. Rizzo may have aged out. Bump should be in the top 10.

Same like me. I just watch a little bit while doing other stuff when the schedule gives me the opportunity to watch. No way I sacrifice anything (like I used to in the past) to watch them play.

Just another super snoozefest, but hey - 31 blocked shots, great stuff! 🥳
Someone mentioned the Flyers outplayed NJ, but 31 blocked shots says otherwise. NJ had them penned in their own end many times. NJ is so much faster and quicker to the puck. This was a standings win but certainly not a hockey win (whatever that means).
