Lol admin just tapped out after 4-2. That's fitting.

This season is turning out to be very similar to last year. Young players showing little to no progress with an exception. The PP, even with a goal tonight, is terrible. The vets are not playing consistent hockey. There clearly comes a breaking point where everyone has to see it's just not working. Fire Cronin.

On the plus side, there is real talent on the team. Zegras, Carlsson, Gauthier, and McTavish should all be solid top 6 players at some point. Terry is already there. Dostal, even with a few Shakey moments, is the real deal as is LaCombe.

They desperately need to add a top 6 forward who can score. The more depth the can create at the top of the lineup will help balance out the lines and matchups. Also, new coaches would help.

These problems are a lot more of a game prep/systems/in game coaching problem than the D we're picking in drafts so i don't really know why that's such a heavy focus of this response, but sure, getting Schaefer would be great.

We run into a crux if we're pinning blame on our defensive coaches b/c we have different results between two sets of youths at the NHL level.

  • People are putting high of expectations on our CHL OFD's to know how to play solid defense impatiently when that was not what they were known for in the CHL. They'll get there eventually b/c they have the talent level, but they lack years of skills experience. They are still in the development stage.

  • The NCAA guys we have in LaCombe and Helleson are more sound defensively at the NHL level b/c they have spent years in the NCAA learning how to play defense. They are able to execute more of what our NHL coaches want from them defensively. Both guys are in the refinement stage than development stage.
  • Last year, LaCombe did improve over the season defensively and offensively to where he was our best overall youth D to conclude the season.

2025 draft prospect LD Schaefer is being touted as a potential top-pairing 2-way D from the CHL. He probably would acclimate to the NHL defensive game faster than OFD's.

I'm more panicked with ES youth forwards than our ES youth d-men. We have older youths (Z and Mac) and younger youths (Carlsson and Cutter) that are being hampered from their natural talent to score. Z and Cutter come from the NCAA. Mac for the CHL (OHL). Carlsson from the SHL. All of them are not developing well offensively. And this has been a problem stemming from last season, which I identified and shared on this board.

I know Cronin sucks, but his deficiency is affecting what the Ducks have the most invested in with top-9 forward picks throughout the two rebuilds. We have four already on the NHL roster. Next year, it could be five top-9 forward picks for nine NHL games with Sennecke. Cronin should be fired just for neutering our offensive youths alone.

I don't know why you keep bringing up young defensemen like I'm talking shit specifically about Lacombe and you need to get ahead of it. It's a combination of factors. Sure it doesn't help that Zellweger and Mintyukov are inexperienced and in the latter's case, he seems to be suffering from confidence issues. But we have vets too. Our structure is dogshit. Our players aren't ready to battle for position or they make stupid defending decisions. Our forwards aren't properly trained to help the defense, and the numbers speak for themselves.

(before updating with tonight's numbers:)

They slipped past San Jose for second to last in goals saved above average after San Jose had a couple shit games.

Second to last in shots on goal against per game, again, a hair better than San Jose.

First in medium danger shots on goal against

Second in high danger shots on goal against (only four fewer than San Jose)

Second to last in takeaways from opponents. Somehow Washington is bad at this.

Dead last in faceoff percentage which does matter for defense.

I wasn't expecting this team to be some defensive fortress but considering how much emphasis they claim to be putting on defense, these numbers are unacceptable. And yes, the fact that offense is being suffocated to league worst numbers in the bid to try to improve defensive performance is also unacceptable. It's all unacceptable.
