staal probably had the better peak and was the better goal scorer, but getzlaf was better at everything else and i'd say had the better overall career

Yeah sounds about right to me as well, or so I 1st thought. Looking more closely Getzlaf did have 4 straight seasons getting some decent Hart votes, as well as Selke recognition through '13-16. Kept it up with solid '17 and '18 as well.

Playoff resume is kind hard to take into account in that time, because Canes mostly sucked and Staal really didn't have a chance to shine there. Getzlaf apart from some disappointing game 6's and 7's was putting up crazy good numbers, and leading the offence in every post-season.. so I think I might actually give Getzy peak here as well, though that's no slight to Staal, because that '06 season seemed to be an all timer. He would've had more opportunies to shine if he was in a better team during that time.

So yeah.

Getzy > Staal
Getzy's snot rockets > Staal's goal-scoring prowess.
