As much as I'd like to see Quinton Hughes be able to play, he shouldn't be allowed to as it stands with regards to the injury status of our team. Canada was able to call up Harley as a contingency in case they dropped below 6 defensemen after the Shea Theodore injury. Harley was, however, not allowed to practice with the team. When Cale Makar was unable to play on Saturday night, Harley was allowed to play the game, because Makar being unable to play would have left Canada with only 5 defensemen. As it stands right now, barring further injury or illness, we still have 6 defensemen.

Also, despite the debate about it, I haven't seen anything about us asking if we could give Hughes the same treatment that Harley got and being denied permission. I also recall reading upthread that Hughes is still in Vancouver for the time being.

So serious question while not flying him across country, what if we wanted to go 11-7 if two of the banged up forwards cannot go. I assume they will have a taxi squad and figure this out a bit better for the 2028 World Cup. I am not really for the Hughes thing at this point. I find it interesting that you wouldn't be afforded a callup to play a lineup that is perfectly legit and defensible from a pure hockey perspective given McAvoy's injury.

I get that 11-7 is rare, but there was an option to insert Sanderson and deploy that system in all the previous games while benching two forwards.

I suppose what it would come down to is us asking the NHL if we can do that, since as far as I can tell, the rules about whether we're allowed to do so don't actually exist. However, also from what I can tell, we haven't asked the NHL in the first place either.

Hughes can 100% go to Boston, he just can't practice or play. They (the team, Hughes or both) have chosen to keep him in Vancouver becuase he, like Harley, would be unable to practice or play unless another injury or illness happened.

You can read into that however you want, but nothing in the rules is stopping him from being in the city of Boston, the TD Garden or even the Team USA lockeroom.

I'm canadian. As far as I can tell usa has 23 and canada has 24.

Canada got to add a player because they had to play 1 game while shorthanded in a position group even though the injured player wasn't out of the tournament.

US had to play a game while down multiple forwards and didn't get to add a player to their roster.

The US chose to play short handed. They intentionally sat players who could have played.

Mike was my favorite player as a kid too and I played centre but in street hockey I was goalie. It's funny because I've lived in Vancouver now for 10 years originally from Winnipeg but was cheering hard for the Rangers that series. Still got that Stanley cup hat somewhere

I'm born and raised just outside Vancouver but fell in love with Richter and the Rangers around 91-92. I was a major devil's advocate growing up, so everyone rooting for the Canucks and giving me grief walking around in my Rangers jersey just cemented my love even more.

Those 94 playoffs I would get out all my Rangers hockey cards, my Richters all in their plastic sleeves and lay them out on my coffee table before every game. I was at my buddy's house and our girlfriends were there for game 6 and my gf saw me cry after the game because i was certain Canucks were gonna do to Rangers what they did to Flames....man....memories.

Edit: I should add.. my dad liked hockey and even played in his youth, but he wasn't a hardcore NHL fan so I wasn't born into being a Canucks fan or Winnipeg (his city of birth) fan. I was free to form my own allegiances.

Sports have the ability to create such wonderful experiences and memories. I love these kinds of stories. I was a Kings fan but I was really into the Canucks at that time too as I couldn't watch enough Pavel Bure. He was mesmerizing.
