they for sure are trying

Players are finishing checks, players are skating pretty hard, and they aren't making stupid ass plays because they don't treat this as a gimmick

I was not enthusiastic about this tournament at all, but objectively speaking its been pretty good hockey and wayyyyy better than the ASG
wayyyyy better than regular season hockey. Somebody said it during the Canada/Sweden game. This tournament shows how watered down, Gary has made the NHL. God bless the fans paying the ridiculous prices to watch regular season Leafs games.

just imagine how intense Canada vs USA is gonna be tonight

the first 10 minutes where each try to set a tone is gonna be can't miss hockey

That's fair, but with Bratt at the end, he just stood in the highish slot waiting for Finns to be draped all over him.

He needed to be on the other side of the ice for a one-timer or to open more space for Bratt or the Dman they were with.
100% agree there, he stood in a spot where his shot was going to get checked by all 3 finns on the ice, either go across the ice for the more risky pass option for bratt who could get it through with his skill, or loop around and come back to give him a drop pass option

Tough to look at on most sites so manually....

5v5 Underlying stats for all 3 Leafs so far:

Matthews:
Shot Differential: 9-2
Scoring chance Differential: 10-3
High Danger Chance Differential: 3-1

Marner:
Shot Differential: 9-7
Scoring chance Differential: 10-4
High Danger Chance Differential: 5-2

Nylander:
Shot Differential: 16-12
Scoring chance Differential: 13-16
High Danger Chance Differential: 2-2
Is it worth looking at those stats for this tournament?

Serious question: Do you guys think the players are actually trying in this tournament or do you think it is more shinny like the all star game?
100% they’re trying. Listening to Cooper talk about the guys on the bench and emotion they’re all showing too, they all really care and they want to win. It’s been fast, there’s been some hitting. I’m enjoying it personally

Maybe that's why these tournaments are so rare, they don't want fans to realize what a garbage product they're getting most of the season.

Fair enough... but when you go from 20 something teams to 32... for a while it's going to get watered down. Also the cap doesn't help this at all.

The next few years will hopefully make it so teams can start stacking up more like the 90s.

Athletes are getting better all the time. Eventually it'll catch up. The NHL isn't even tapping into a lot of different countries yet. One day there will be a ton of hockey players from places you never would of thought.

It's easy to say as a fan too .... but also 4th liner in the NHL would crush anyone on this board for the most part.

Professional sports should probably only have 14 teams. Talent gets pretty thin after that.

To be honest with you, I am of the belief that having 20 teams is better. And the cap is terrible. If teams like Carolina wouldn't survive, I couldn't care less. I don't care about tapping into different countries or markets. Maybe hockey is not for everyone? Why do we have to force it and keep some teams in certain markets afloat?

I said 14. 20 is fine as well. Strong markets no caps. Better quality hockey assured

The cap will always be there now for better or worse unfortunately.

And when I said other countries I meant the players themselves. Not the teams.

So if you get more people playing hockey and getting really good at it.... eventually 32 teams would be fine.

However I agree some cities don't deserve them right now and they've expanded to quickly... but given time 32 is fine when hockey grows more.

It's just money grabs right now.

TV deals in the US

16 team league would be beautiful (easy division). So only half our players would make it, core 4, 74, 23, 44, 8, 22, all the rest would be in a lower league, exactly where they belong.

20 teams sounds good, also a 56 game season. Play the 9 teams in your division 4 times, and the other 10 twice. Two divisions, top 6 in each division make the playoffs and the top two in each get byes.

I'm still not excited about this tournament, don't really care all that much who wins. Hoping for an exciting game and still cheering for Canada of course and if everyone plays like they're into it, maybe I'll get excited at some point, we'll see.

Last year when Matthews couldn't play in playoffs due to being sick people called him soft.

Meanwhile Makar is out tonight. Haven't seen that narrative

Makar not playing is a huge blow
Harley will play tonight. I wonder what the pairings are going to look like.

If Matthews has a Conn Smythe and a cup ring people wouldn't have say anything about his illnesses and injuries.
