Wrong thread guy. We're talking Canada vs Sweden here.
He only has one gear.

I still cant believe people thought this would look like an all star game and wouldnt be good. Maybe the worst predictions ever made around here and thats saying a lot. These guys looked as dialed in as any game 7 in the playoffs.
How were the Swedes numbers?

L2 and L3 were money. Difficult to juggle L1 and L4 players. We might see Bennet come in.

Rhino and Mitch wern't great, but Mitch gets the edge for the 3rd period. McD needs a shooter though.

Hagel-McD-Rhino
Crosby-Mack-Mitch

Maybe?

Perhaps give it another game.

Yeah, the All Star/Exhibition take was weird. This was always going to be a balls to the wall event.

Can tell that McDavid line was missing a Hyman type player. I get what Cooper is doing with the lines by having defensive responsible players with the offensive guys but they didn't have any speed with him or someone who is hard on the puck around the net and loves retrieving pucks for skilled guys. Maybe switch Hagel with Reinhart.

I didn’t like Hagel at the start on that Cirelli line but I think it was 3 on 3 when he was winning puck battles making retreats under pressure and just holding the puck in chaos that I thought was impressive. He weathered the storm for them.

Yeah Marner cheats defensively, does the same thing for the Leafs, some people have trouble identifying that. He and McDavid looked out of sync no doubt but it’s to be expected.

My point was more that MacKinnon and Crosby were good together so it’s doubtful they’d be broken up.

Maybe Stone and Rienhart flip spots?
Really I doubt they change the top two lines at all and just let them continue to find some chemistry.
Marner is not very fast so I assume Cooper told him to concentrate on the defensive side. If they need a goal they can always move him off the line.

Always bet on Crosby showing up when the spotlight is on. He's a Gamer that's for sure and I'm not referring to video games. Just as in 2010 it was easy call to pick Crosby as the Golden Goal scorer in OT and of course he didn't disappoint.

Glad to see Marner decided to shoot there. I've always viewed it this way (I was a pass-first guy too whenever I played hockey, it was natural as I had accuracy in my intent), if you can pass the puck accurately, you can shoot it where you want it more accurately too. He picked the top corner on that shot like he shot 1000 times against a cut-out goalie in his driveway. It's not always a slapshot that fools a goalie (though it helps).

Hopefully some of Crosbys commitment to winning when it matters most rubs off on him when he is there. Mario learned a great deal being around Gretzky in the '87 Canada Cup and he took his game to the next level when he saw how much Wayne wanted to win.

You can't just sit back and rely on hockey skills training, you have to dig deep and will your team to victory. Mario could easily outclass his opponents as did Wayne, the difference was Mario saw hockey as a great paying job that he was just naturally great at while Wayne loved the game (and loved to win).

Once you turn that corner, it's downhill.

I don't know where that Czech/Canada game ranks in people's minds for all time great games but for me it''s top 3. Now I was just a 10 year old kid but I never saw goaltending like that and Sittler's winner was the kind of ecstasy I imagine a Stanely Cup winner must feel like. Being a Leaf devotee for a mere 50+ years, I wouldn't know for sure, but that's how it felt for me.
As a proud Canadian, and diehard life-long Leafs fan, that when a Maple Leaf player scores a meaningful goal helping Canada WIN its like you a double down winning proposition for me.

As someone old enough and lucky enough to witness and bask in the glory of the Leafs 1967 Stanley Cup and been waiting painfully ALL these years since to see another Leafs Cup, then living vicariously through meaningful moments like Darryl Sittler's OT winning goal in 1976 Canada Cup, or Paul Henderson series deciding goal in the Canada/Russia Summit series as Leaf players representing Canada, that also top 5 highlight moments in my life as well.

Those moments are like a picture locked in time in my mind for me, and I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing to this day, from events > 50 years ago when my Maple Leaf players help my Country succeed. Proud moments like that never fade and in fact fuel the desire for future success for my Leafs and when they also proudly represent my country.

PS. I even remember Don Cherry commenting on prior to the start of OT period in 1976 that Canada players should go wide on Czech goalie Vladimir Dzurilla. Then when Sittler after hearing the interview from the locker-room prior, referenced it after scoring his winning goal thereafter, as a way to exploit the Czech goalie's weakness to get him off his angle. So instead of making a play to break aggressivley inside towards the net, he went wide around the Czech defender and sure enough the strategy worked. :)

You responded to me guy. And I was referring to how Marner was playing how we see him in playoff series. Read the main board thread - guy, and you will note that most share my observations that he wasn't good.

The game I enjoyed the most in that series was the round robin Czech/Canada game, that ended up 1-0 Czech. Great play after great play by forwards and defencemen on both teams and some excellent saves by both goalies. The only thing that could have been better was the outcome.

I thought the line looked better in the third period.

Took awhile for every line to find some chemistry on both teams.

Saturday's game should be interesting. I expect it will be pretty physical and McDavid and Mack will have to be the difference makers.
They did have that one shift where they hemmed the nylander line in for a bit, but even then I found the line underwhelming with the amount of talent on it

That line, Canada’s team in general and especially their goaltending will need to be much better against U.S.A, I doubt they come out as bad as Sweden, have a pp as bad as Sweden, or have their goalie give up soft goal like the stone goal.

How were Nylanders stats by comparison?
Leaf fans don't seem to have much of an opinion on his play last night......weird.

I actually think this tournament leads way to the NHL doing an in-season tournament like the NBA does.

If the premise is to give some more meaningful hockey mid-season outside of the typical regular season games, I don't see the harm.

Olympics every four years. World Cups every four years, two years opposite each Olympics. Every other alternate non-Olympics or World Cup year do an in-season tournament.
It has been confirmed yesterday that upcoming World Cups will be held during February.

Nylander was pretty much Nyalnder. Created some offense and made a couple nice defensive plays, and also made some terrible plays.

Might have won it in OT if they called the too many men on Canada.

Yeah, Canada got away with one there.
