Marner not doing himself any favors dispelling narratives this tournament again. As soon as the games got physical and intense he vanished
It's real simple for me if I am the Leafs, in business we call this "opportunity cost". The cost of keeping Marner is the worst of two options if the alternative is say, getting a McDavid (if he goes to Free Agency) or any other Gamer who rises to the occasion.

In fact, I would vehemently argue that re-signing JT at $7M a year while letting Marner walk for nothing is a better option than resigning both of them, even if JT took a $5M a year salary. I think $7M is too much for him based on age and playoff success, but, the amount Marner will get dwarfs this.

McDavid showed last playoffs that he is there when the chips are down, he has some fire in his belly along with insane skill. Let's not forget how hard he worked to recover from the knee injury when he took that hit from Gio years ago. That is a tell tale sign of a guy who is determined. He'd make a great Leaf if we could snag him.

Although I completely agree with you, but I do think it is best not to compare any players to McD as he is really on a level by himself.

Our guys really don't have that switch to dominate when the going gets tough, which is really sad.

Yeah, I wouldn't compare McDavid to Matthews, but even Matthews to Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk and the results are dismal. The first sign that he's lost a step or two is Eichel being named 1C to go into the tournament. But at this point he's like sleepwalking through a Mark Scheifele level season while drawing down accrued superstar reputation. Just disappointing on the biggest stage alongside his peers.
