Value of: 3C/PK Specialist to NJ

I was saying a couple of days ago the Devils need to remain patient and not overspend or strap the cap while the kids gel together. However, there is one glaring hole that needs to be addressed immediately. The Devils special teams is atrocious. If the Devils can’t score on the PP, they at least need to be able to kill off penalties. None of the bottom 6 at this point is even on the PK, except for McLeod, for face-off purposes. When Nico is killing 4 penalties a night, he’s playing in situations that eat up productive ice time that can be used 5v5 or on the PP. If Tom Fitzgerald is talking about competing in late April in big games, he needs to get help and get more productivity from the bottom 6 outside of 5v5.

The Devils need a 3C/PK specialist that can maybe move to Wing when Jack comes back and Mercer moves back to 3C. Is there a player available like that?

Probably would be willing to give up assets like:
2022 2nd-4th Round picks
Jesper Boqvist
Kevin Bahl
Nikita Okhotyuk
Marian Studenic

Who’s that player and what would it take?

Adam Henrique has 9 points in 11 games, he's available and i think he'd waive to go back to NJ.
He's actually shooting below his career 15.4% with 14.3%.

They had one of the worst PK% ever last year and they still brought Nas back, this year looks to be another train wreck on the PK
How this guy still has a job is beyond me
The PP has been almost as bad and it's evident that neither him nor Recchi have a clue how to improve the special teams

I don't think adding another player will solve anything, until there is a coaching change it will be the same thing over and over

Doesn't New Jersey already have a 3C/PK Specialist in Hischier?
That’s all he is looking like right now to be honest. Mercer is going to pass him on the depth chart soon if both players continue to play the way they currently are.
It’s more of a coaching failure than anything .
Special teams are crushing them . 5 on 5 the Devils looks very good but their PP and PK fail more often than not and it destroys any momentum they have .
I’d rather get someone like Tarasenko for the PP . We need someone that can finish. Holtz is looking amazing in the AHL but he still needs to work on other parts of his game plus I don’t want him on a disaster for a PP and every forward minus Mercer struggling right now .

Kind of amazing how many top 5 picks are not living up to expectations nowadays.

2015 - Dylan Strome - 3rd overall
2016 - Olli Juolevi - 5th overall
2017 - Nico Hischier - 1st overall
2017 - Nolan Patrick - 2nd overall
2018 - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - 3rd overall
2018 - Barrett Hayton - 5th overall
2019 - Jack Hughes - 1st overall
2019 - Kaapo Kakko - 2nd overall
2020 - Alexis Lafreniere - 1st overall

Still early for some of the more recent guys on that, but it's certainly alarming.

To be clear, most of these guys will still have serviceable NHL careers. Some better than others. This is just about expectations.

But seriously...maybe Alex Wennberg? I'm pretty sure that he was quite competent on the PK last year for Florida? Maybe Panthers fans can confirm? I don't think Seattle is really utilizing him a ton there this year, and they signed him to a three year deal so I'm not sure what their appetite is for trading him, but I would think he kind of fits the bill?

How has Hischer, Lafy and Hughes not loved to expectations. Hughes is looking like a franchise C, Hischer wasn’t that hyped probably a 70 point 1c was his expectation. That’s still very possible. Laffy is a 19 year old in the NHL very similar production to a 19 year old Mackinnon

1st overall picks have historically had a bigger impact in a shorter period of time than all 3 of them.

I think the ship has sailed on Hischier living up to 1st overall pick levels of production, but I still think he's a good middle 6 Center.

Hughes has flashed but needs to stay healthy and put it together for an entire season.

It's looking like we're gonna have to wait another season for that Lafreniere breakout.

Besides, just read my post again where I said "it's still early for some of the more recent guys."

Special teams are areas where clearly coaching should have a big influence. The Devils need better special teams coaches. It's been a consistent theme of the past few years.
