I don’t think Cronin has set him up to fail, but he has set him up not to succeed to his potential, if that makes sense.
I mean. I think it comes down to priorities. The team is playing better. The top two lines are finally meshing and playing better. The third line is still the same flapping nothing it's been more or less all season.
I legitimately believe that Cronin thinks Killorn's veteran experience is valuable to Leo's development. If that's the belief and the thought process is "Leo can learn from watching Killorn" he's a f***ing moron. I don't know what kind of advice Killer gives him on the bench, locker room, practice ice, etc., but it's clear that after a huge sample of games together, their chemistry is virtually non existent. Getting Leo linemates that he can perform better with should be a priority, but who do you move off the top two lines if you're still trying to prioritize keeping up the better quality of hockey?
I mean to me, I don't really think Mac and Gauthier have chemistry as much as both are just playing better. Could be worth it to try to move Killorn up to the second line and try Leo with Cutter and Leason or Fabbri. But then Killorn makes life harder for Mac.
In an ideal world we would acquire a new winger with solid ability to play with Leo and we move Killer down to the fourth line.
