He has one of the worst break-out passes in the NHL for a top pairing D-man, and is horrible on the point on the PP.
He can eat big minutes and is a good defensive D-man, but is prone to boneheaded turnovers.

I don't disagree that he has a poor break-out pass and that he shouldn't be on the PP (although I don't mind him being on the 2nd unit). However, that does not mean he is a below average d-man. That's just one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Sounds like something a Fish or Debbie fan would say.

lol. That's just laughably untrue.

If only. He's benefited tremendously from having Staal and McDonagh to cover his ass. I think we could make Gilroy look even half-decent if we had him with McDonagh every night.

It's painful how big of a pass this guy gets because of the situations his defensive pair gets him out of. Girardi is the direct result of the Rangers being hemmed in their zone for 2-3 extra minutes because 9 times out of 10, he just flings the puck aimlessly as soon as he touches it. But he'll block a shot or two or make one or two hits, and somehow everyone is blind to every other aspect of his game.
