I preferred Eklund, but an overwhelming amount of text and charts advocated for McTavish. Not ready yet to call it a miss, but not looking good.
It may be a hot take but I'm starting to feel Madden and the scouting team are a tad overrated, especially when I look at teams like Dallas or Colorado and their uncanny ability to seem to draft superstars. I don't think we have any superstars and as much as I like Sennecke I doubt he is going to be worth the 3rd overall they used on him, time will tell but the whiffs are starting to add up.

Wasn't happy at the time of the pick, after McTavish's first NHL season I was feeling better, but the fact McTavish is the same player now as he was in game 1 of his NHL career while pretty much every player from pick 4 to 9 has improved quite a bit year on year is extremely worrying.

Colorado haven't drafted a top 6 forward since Ratanen which was nearly 10 years ago, heck outside of Makar in that time their drafting has been pretty terrible for the best part of a decade. And you could argue the only top 4 defenceman they have drafted in that same time is Makar (and maybe Byram).

Dallas obviously are the gold standard of drafting in the NHL the last decade, we're still one of the better drafting teams in the NHL.

Player development is the biggest issue in the organisation by far.

Dallas is so good their drafting department is going to start getting poached for GM or AGM positions. Madden and co have done great, other than a few big brain moves that the jury is still out on, they’ve hit on the positions they needed to.

I agree. We haven't done well with forwards. Guys like Carlsson and Z were no-brainers. I still like Mctavish a lot but you could argue they should've taken somebody else. Sennecke could be good or bad, too early to say right now, but they'd better gotten it right. Sometimes the sheer amount of games played metric played by our drafted forwards is thrown around here as evidence that we've done well. I hate that as a justification because it's quantity over quality and we've had bad teams for a while so guys are gonna get in games here that they wouldn't have elsewhere (this kind of applies more to the Steels and Joneses i'd say. Maybe Lundy too).

Conversely i've been very happy with the dmen we've picked. So far in Madden's tenure, the only forward picks that i've really been impressed by are Rakell and Terry.

Not saying you're wrong, but you guys are discounting development and/or coaching as the problem?

I like McGinn higher in the lineup. Maybe he’ll buy Leo some space to make those dangerous passes he really seems to want to make.
Yeah, I'll be happy if he can make simple passes off the boards to aid exits out of the d-zone. I am expecting him to forecheck like crazy and carry that load, hopefully opening stuff up for Leo and Killorn. The cherry on top would be some nice play around the net.

Can I take back what I said about Cronin's one forward he's good at coaching being Leason? Maybe he's just relying on the healthy scratch bounce because he has no other tools in his toolkit.
Punishing a bottom six player because he wasn't good in a top six role is kind of like being overly harsh on a rookie defenseman who's playing his off side on the top pairing... oh wait, he's on record as doing that, too.

I do like McGinn on the Carlsson line. Guy's really been good this season after nobody could even remember he existed for a year and a half, you love to see it.

Hi! Jets fan here. I came to see a game in your lovely city and beautiful building about 10 years ago. Was a great trip. Question for you duck faithful. What in the hell is with these jerseys?
