Hi,

I’m ready for everyone to hate it (including my team fanbase)—> Crazy 3-way trade on the premise that:

Islanders goes into a full rebuild
Habs want an impactful C + RD
Sabres wants to compete and change the culture for good

:habs
Tage Thompson
Mattias Samuelsson

:isles
16th ovr (Habs)
17th ovr (Habs)
Michael Hage/Owen Beck (to step in now if preferred)
Logan Mailloux
UPL

:sabres
Ilya Sorokin
Bo Horvat
Scott Mayfield

Habs are giving up a lot but they're all unknows so I don't think it gets them Thompson

With all due respect, this trade doesn't sense.

For Montreal:
Tage Thompson is not a center. He's a PP specialist winger. And Mattias Samuelsson is awful. On that contract, he's a cap dump. And he's an LHD--Sabres are the only team incompetent enough to routinely play defensemen on their offside like as if it doesn't matter. So you're getting neither an impact center nor RD for the overpay of 16th OA, 17th OA, and two prospects.

For the Islanders:
The difference between Sorokin and UPL is not two mid-1sts and two prospects. UPL is on a decent contract. They're getting too much.

For the Sabres:
This is a lateral move that doesn't actually make them better. They desperately need a forward who can drive play. Horvat can pretty much do everything except that. He'd be the true center they need for their Top 6, but he's a scorer (not as good of a scorer as Thompson), and he doesn't help his linemates produce. Sure they upgrade in net, but Sorokin won't receive Vezina votes playing behind that lineup.

Lmao no. But not terrible considering the pieces.

Tage is the best player involved and Sabres are taking on an insane amount of money and won’t be able to make many moves beyond this.

Tage Thompson had the least PP goals out of the entire top 15 goal scorers besides Hagel who had 0. He also led the league in EV goals.

He also plays center just fine. Nice try tho.

This was the first season where he didn't score at outsized proportion of his goals on the PP, and I'm sure it had something to do with his extended time at Wing and marked increase in shooting percentage.

Based on my eye test, I disagree. And Ruff must disagree too because he was moved to Wing, and he stayed here even after Norris went down, event though Buffalo didn't have a single proven Top 6 center.

Wait so we are counting previous seasons that allows him to be labeled PP specialist but only counting this season that labels him be a winger? Got it, so we are arguing in bad faith.

Leading the league in EV goals but he’s a powerplay specialist. Ok.

Okay, maybe as a C he's a PP specialist but as a wing he can be effective and productive at EV. I'll concede that point.

But he's not a good Center. I've been saying this for years, and it's validating to see Ruff move him.

Also, might want to revamp your eye test

Tage Thompson the leading even strength goal scorer in the NHL is a PP specialist?

You are correct he played mostly wing this year. But he played centre almost exclusively the three years prior. Including a 94-point season.

If you want him to play centre, I think he can play centre.

No we are only counting the center to wing switch this year but his PP stats only count for prior years. Dont you know that we are only considering things that help his terrible argument?

You watch Tage Thompson and think he’s bad? Sounds like a you problem. I’m just showing you by every measurable you claim he’s lacking in, that it’s not true.

Dig UP!
You watch the Sabres and expected them to finish Top 10 in the East?
Obviously the Team USA staff agreed with me. Second highest American goal scorer over the past couple years, and they said no thanks. Even though Robertson's spot was open.

He scored the most goals in the NHL since January. USA could’ve used a Tage Thompson instead of Chris Kreider, literally everybody said it after the gold medal game.

Is that supposed to be your checkmate? Jesus man just quit while you’re ahead. It’s fine to be wrong, if you don’t like Tage as a player just say that.

You said he’s a PP expert, you were wrong. Just say it. It’s ok to make a mistake on a team you don’t follow

As a Sabres fan, no idea what Islanders are getting; We are giving up our best forward. Horvat is solid and we get a goalie too. samuellson is a cap dump essentially.

Ehhh not sure many Sabres fans are gonna like this.

I'll give him credit at least for correctly targeting Buffalo's needs.

Not sure many teams are actively seeking to trade elite goal scorers who are 6'6" and locked up at $7M for another 5 years.

Sabres ain't got much, but Thompson's the type of chip that rarely hits the market.
