A rare 3-way trade that might work out for all teams IMO.

Toronto receives:
Andrew Mangiapane (5,8M x1yr UFA)
Rasmus Andersson (4,6M x2yr UFA)
Caps 1st 2026

Washington receives:
Mitch Marner (10,903 x1yr UFA)

Calgary receives:
Connor McMichael (2,1M x2yr RFA)
Timothy Liljegren (3,0M x2yr RFA)

The reasoning:

Toronto
are heavily invested (as we all know) in their top-3 forwards (+ pending UFA Tavares) which prevents them from spending at other areas of need. Marner seems to be the one taking the heat for them failing to challenge for the cup and he’s up for a slight raise. But should they commit to 8yrs or should they spread the wealth?
Rasmus Andersson is a fast skating, all-situations, RHD who put up points and plays 24 min/game. Finally a great partner for Rielly. Andrew Mangiapane is intelligent puck-hound that can score and play both wings up and down the lineup. Plays on the PP and the PK, had a 35-goal season a few years back. Not a replacement for Marner but can do some of the things he does. Toronto also get cap relief in moving Liljegren who’s been a healthy scratch recently. They also get a 1st round pick to either use in a trade or restock the pipeline.

Calgary is rumored to be looking for a 2C and get one in McMichael. He has been playing wing this year because of the logjam at C for the Caps. He has started the season on fire with 8 pts in 6 games. Just entered the 1st year of a bridge deal that leaves him RFA after next season.
Losing Andersson hurts but they have Weegar locked in for a long time and Liljegren will probably thrive with a fresh start in a new environment. He’s also on a bridge deal that makes him a RFA after next year. His underlying numbers has always been good but seems to be the scapegoat for when things turn bad in Toronto.

Washington
Caps give up 3 good pieces and takes on a little more salary, but they get the player to succeed Ovechkin once he retires in two years. Caps have struggled to score in recent years and Marner would be a huge boost to that while also being really good at his own end. Caps could afford to take on his salary as they have a lot of big contracts coming off the books in the next few years along with players on ELC’s such as Mirosnichenko and Leonard. Marner also know HC Carberry and would fit the age profile for the core group who’ll lead the next era of the Caps.

Not good for Calgary, and Washington would be very tight at the cap, I would say Calgary passes.

So we get a waiver type defenseman and a waiver wire type forward for our 1st pairing right shot 2 way defenseman on a cap hit of half his market value? Fantastic proposal.

Washington is the team getting screwed here btw.

Why is TO getting the 1st, which would more likely go to calgary if anything, although McMichael+1st+Lilligren would be too much for Andersson. If they eat half of Marner's contract maybe that would be fair

Summary

To CGY: McMichael, Liljegren, 1st
From CGY: Andersson, 50% retention on Marner

To TOR: Andersson, Mangiapane
From TOR: Marner, Liljegren

To WSH: Marner (50% retained)
From Wash: Mangiapane, McMichael, 1st

No offense to Mitch Marner but why would Washington which is in a more rebuilding/retooling phase want to trade a young forward they drafted and is just starting to break out for them and a 1st round pick? They need some more pieces to become a contender yet so Marner is not going to get them there.

I actually think this is a good trade for Calgary if they were actually going to trade Andersson. Getting a good young forward that can play center and a d-man in a deal would be a decent return. Maybe a pick added in there. I can't imagine why Washington makes this trade though.

Rasmus Andersson certainly has more league wide value than Mitch Marner does with their respective contracts.

Caps can just wait 9 months to try and sign Marner for free.

Caps haven't moved substantial futures for many years now, there's no reason to start now.
