GDT: 3/29/25 - 2:00PM EDT - New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay

Well .... Looks like me staying away was almost too powerful of luck. But thankfully JJ and Kuch tried to reign in those god like powers. JJ is good for 3 goals, and seriously Kuch. Like holy f***, I get that you like assists but f***ing hell that could have been so bad. That's the kind of shit that you look at as a coach and you have to punish. Regardless of the 4 point game, you can't allow that to go unpunished.

It’s ok to call kucherov out, of course. But those esoteric plays that bend the old time hockey minds are exactly why he scores the most points in the team.
There's always a subtle dig or angle when it comes to critiques of Kuch. Just call it for what it is. They were blatantly unacceptable plays by any standard of professional hockey, just like people call out horrible plays from other players. These were egregiously bad. Even prior to the major gaffe of passing up the EN, Cernak was staring daggers at him for the botched pass in his own zone. Esoteric, old hockey minds...come on.

We've done very well to put ourselves in a position where we are entirely capable of winning the division as April begins. Can't ask for more than that.

But we need to not trip over ourselves on this last roadtrip of the season. We only have 12 regulation wins on the road in 36 games this season. We've been awful on the road. And this is not, on paper, a very difficult road trip. We're facing one wild card team, two teams who may (between themselves) grab the other wild card spot but probably won't, and a last place team. This has to be, at a minimum, a 5 point road trip, maybe more but we can likely survive and give ourselves a reasonable shot at this with that much. The Toronto and Florida games come after that, but they only matter if we're within two points or better on them when we get to those games.

I don't think Kuch needs to be punished. That's overkill. He knows what he did wrong. Just talk to him and have him explain himself so the lesson settles in.

How important is home ice advantage to us re playoffs?

I actually believe being the team "without" home-ice can be its own advantage. Only the away team gets a 3-games-in-4-at-home stretch in a series. And just getting one of those first two on the road can put the other team under pressure. We've been dismal at home in the playoffs recently, only 1-6 in our last seven playoff home games.

The consideration is about why winning the Atlantic would be so important is because we've got three very-evenly matched teams here. Two of them are guaranteed to face each other, one guaranteed to be one-and-done. Odds are whoever wins that series will need to go through the third team in order to escape the division.

I'd rather not get stuck having to defeat Toronto AND Florida when, if we win the division and do our job in the first round, we'd only need to beat Toronto OR Florida. That's why winning the division is of great importance. Not to say Ottawa would be easy, there's really no such thing as an "easy" playoff series, but if the choice is Ottawa or Florida/Toronto, I don't need to spend two seconds making my preference clear. We should be able to beat Ottawa.

As you correctly stated, there's no easy team and "should" beat them.

We "should" have beaten Columbus in 2019, too. Ottawa has been very annoying to play against. Seem to give us some issues.

Kucherov has 3 more goals, 5 less games played, and 3 less empty net points. However, he's not even considered to be finalist for the Hart.

I just don't want Florida.

Crazy how all the talking points about empty net points, gap between second closest on the team, etc doesn't matter now.

Hart will be out of his hands but if he beats MacKinnon for the Art Ross then that's great.

Yeah my respect for the Hart trophy is almost non-existent after last season. He's such a long shot to be a finalist I imagine he'd have to win by double digit points to get it. Same as last year

Esposito was having a ministroke over it live on the radio. Not tapping in an EN goal, so crazy and stupid it might just work!

Jokes aside, I think we all understand what you're saying and in the end are much quicker to dismiss his risky plays because of it, he was still a beast tonight. Just needs to not cross the line from risky over to reckless.
