Assuming leafs decide to try and buy this year are there any good 2Cs and 2LWs the leafs can acquire?

Assets on table: Ben Danford, 2026 1st, Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten, 2025 2nd

Looking for good but not elite players. Guys with at least 2 playoff runs and not rentals preferrably.

Want to get these roles filled to be able to run three lines evenly and try to build a deep team in a matchup vs Sens/Wings/Bolts/Bruins etc

Knies - Matthews - Domi
2LW - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - 2C - Marner

What teams have pieces which can be filled in at these slots and what would be the cost for these assets?

Naw too low end those guys

need higher end assets

Frost + Farabee are better players than Evans/Anderson for me and they didnt get that type of package.

For the above package need a 2nd liners and not 3rd/4th liners being filled in that spot

For evans if we couldnt find a 2C id do our 2025 2nd as an offer.

Wouldnt be interested in Anderson

Make any difference if You take Danford out? I had him as do not draft last draft. .

Friedman said earlier this week that Toronto, NJ, and Ottawa are interested in Mittelstadt. What would the Leafs offer for him?

I value Rakell lower than Pens fans based on previous discussions

Id do Danford and 2nd for him

But not Cowan. I would use Cowan + 1st for the 2C.

does Rakell play LW or RW better?

I wouldn't do Danford and a 2nd because Danford's looking like a pretty bum 1st rounder right now. Not super interested in him. I'd want either a 1st or Cowan in that deal.

Rakell is exploding this year while playing LW and it turns out he can also play center too (played center against the Rangers). I think he's best off at LW but is also very effective at RW and can play center in a pinch.

Whats his contract situation?

Talent wise hes a Cowan + 1st level asset.

My concern is hes being sold so early after being acquired by the Avs and they got him to be 2C on contender which he has not

That doesnt reassure me he could be worth that package and deliver in toronto tbh.

Id still keep Middlestadt in the back of my mind and consider a deal if we cant get someone else

At his best hes a great 2C option but right now his play concerns me as a buyer

If he could be a center Id do 1st + Danford for him but I dont think he can be 2C tbh in the playoffs for us.

He is a potential asset. And based off this thread if MLSE was 100% serious about core 4 trying to win and wanted to bought id do

1. Middlestadt for Cowan + 2nd

2. Rakell for 1st + Nienela type asset

Ofcourse the cap retention would need to be done or we would have to dump kampf and jarnkrok on pens/avs to make cap fit

they already have a 2C

Don't think the assets are good enough overall to get both a 2C and 2LW, unless both are low end of the spectrum or have bad contract. IMO the Leafs would be better off targeting good role players. Think guys like Gourde, Evans, Armia, Lizotte, Joseph, Faksa, Stenlund, etc.

I'd consider Evans for Danford+
Both Evans and Armia for Danford + Minten
They are one of the best bottom 6 PK duo in the league. I think there's added value in getting both together.

Bottom 6 C's go for 1sts and you're wanting a 2C and 2LW? Lol be prepared to lose all your best assets.

McMann is a 2LW. He has absolutely earned it. They need more of a 3LW. And Marner on the 3rd line?

Call me crazy... but I don't think Casey Middelstadt is a "1st + Cowan" type of player.... nor is he an ideal candidate to be a 3rd line centre.

Yes, he's put up over 50 points twice, which is good, but here he is moved to Colorado and hasn't really taken off.

Ultimatley I think the Leafs would probably be looking more at 1st + something else... but realistically... are the Avs going to sell on Mittelstadt? seems like a flawed approach.

I'd do Cowan and a 2025 2nd for Rakell, but I'm not sure Rakell is the kind of winger Toronto would be targeting.

I'm not sure Dubas would want Cowan.

When he was here he targeted guys that he either

A had a client when he was an agent like Zach Hyman.

B played for him in the Soo.

C played in the Soo in general.

Cowan was not brought to Toronto by Dubas, although the 1st round pick they to pick him was.

Fraser Minten was Brought to Toronto by Dubas he would be more likely to be Dubas target

O'Reilly, Marchand, Schwartz, Nelson is probably the 1st + Cowan tier
Novak, Zucker, Crouse, Bjugstad, Frederick, Suter, Cates, Laughton, Donato, Tanev, Evans is the 2nd + up and coming prospect tier or 1st + tweener prospect tier
Kuraly, Fabbri, Kunin, Carcone, Cousins, Beauvillier, Faksa is low pick tier

Obtaining another C, moves Domi to the wing, which puts into question the need for a winger.

I also think we are looking far too much into big names, when we should be looking smaller. Matthews and Tavares are a good top 2 C's, and will be for some time.

I've thought the Leafs should go after a kid like Krebs in Buffalo. I don't know what the ask is, but Buffalo is likely looking to change things up, and I think like many before him, once Krebs is out of Buffalo, he'll be a better player. The trade cost shouldn't be prohibitive, and the cap wouldn't be a problem.

McMann is a 3LW for me but hed be playing with newly acquired 2C + Marner

And this approach would be set to have 3 1st line level talent driving their own lines and having good supporting pieces aroubd then

All three would play around same amount of EVS mins per game wity 4th line used 5-6 mins a game only

I guess the focus here is to bu8ld a deep and balanced team that has three strong 1st lines.

Its like the 2019 Blues

They had

RoR
Schenn
Thomas

Or 2023 Knights

Eichel
Stephenson
Karlsson

Matthews and JT are there but we need another center who can create/finish offense and generate looks for either Marner or Nylander.

Middlestadt has been pretty good for 2.5 years. Avs fans loved him last year and he was pretty good in the playoffs.

He is young enough to be a good player for 5-6 years for us

If Flames continue to fall off, Backlund + Coleman. Ready to go 3rd line that will make anyone that plays with them better.
