Any one know how many mins on average Pronger played in the playoffs during his stint in Edmonton and the year he won the Stanley Cup in Anaheim?

Edit: "Pronger has averaged more than 31 minutes a game in the playoffs, with a high of 47:17 during a crucial double-overtime win against Detroit in the opening round. Edmonton went on to beat the NHL's best regular-season team in six games, the biggest upset this postseason."

Average minutes per 60 minutes of game time is what we're comparing on this thread. Putting in games with overtime duration like the playoffs is going to be misleading. Still grueling physically, but its not quite the same measurable.

He played crazy minutes in Edmonton. He played a lot for us as well in 06-07. The difference that year was that we had Neidermayer eating up a lot of those minutes. Especially since they rarely played together. Scotty typically took more playing time than Pronger, but it also depended on the opponents. Pronger played a lot against bigger stronger opponents like Thornton while Scott would play against the faster or more 'finesse' type players. I remember hearing that Scott would sit on the bench when they put Pronger out there and he'd wait about a minute, turn and tell the coaches he was ready to go and they'd throw him back out there. The third pairing almost never played 10 minutes a game while Pronger/Scott would routinely play over 26 or so and would frequently approach 30 IIRC.

As to the topic, if a guy is in good enough shape that he can do it without slipping in production, then go for it I guess. I do think that you're being a little bit dangerous though in that over the course of a full 82 game schedule, you're far more likely to get that guy hurt when he's playing that much.

Thanks for that reply. Was Beauchemin playing a lot as well as the #3rd D?

Yea, Beauch was playing a lot because he was Scott's partner. Same situation having O'Donell playing with Pronger. Not to say those guys weren't any good, but IMO they wouldn't have played that much if they had different partners. They were getting a lot of even strength minutes because they were paired up with hall of famers. On special teams, the pairs would be shaken up a little bit.

I remember reading something on Beauch from when he was first traded to Anaheim. I'm too lazy to look it up now but IIRC the strength and conditioning coach put Beauch on the stationary bike a ton and also put him on a really restricted diet as soon as he got to southern California. I think he lost like 15 or 20 pounds because they needed him to play with Neidermayer. It just really stressed the rigor of playing around 23+ minutes versus playing like 18 or so. I couldn't even imagine the strain that 29+ puts on a persons' body if they do it on average over the course of a season.

I think that both of there Ice Times should be cut a bit leading up to the playoffs.

If they can average 23-26 mind and sit in any blow out games and go under 20. That'd be great I think.

Ice time management an important tool

Can you imagine what PK could do if he played close to 30 minutes and the powerplay was working?

Seeing as he was gassed to the point of being a negative vs the NYR in that series, not much?

Players aren't made to regularly play those kinds of minutes. On occasion, sure.

People realize the Wild and Kings are both out of playoff position at this moment, right?

I suppose if the Kings went on a tear and solidified playoff position, Doughty will get his ice time cut, but Sutter doesn't trust the other right-side D men who are playing (Matt Greene and Jamie Mcbain). Until Kings secure a playoff spot, Doughty will average ~30 mins. He played 32:11 in an important game tonight against the Flames...

No player should play 30 minutes

If a player is playing 30 minutes then something is wrong with the rest of the team

Yup. Which is exactly what's up with the Kings D this year. Losing Voynov pretty much put it all on Doughty's shoulders this season, which is why he's received some Norris buzz. He played 32 minutes tonight against the Flames.

In fairness, he should be receiving Norris buzz regardless of ice time.

But that's a staggering among of TOI.

Go back to last year + Olympics + playoffs + all his ice time this year. Really speaks to the conditioning many of these athletes find themselves in. Remarkable.

For the Kings sake you hope it doesn't catch up to him

Just if there team is blowing the other team out to give them a rest. If they keep up this pace they could be burnt out for the playoffs.

Doughty is a key cog in L A and him being exhausted won't help

Ok, and whatever you say biased fan?

I'm not saying he's bad, I just disagree that he's been noticeably better, he's been relatively the same imo.

He's been better, but I think that more has to do with playing with Methot instead of rotating 30 mins a night through Phillips, Cowen, Boroweiki, and Weircoch
