Yeah, I think this is the case. I promptly canceled my trial subscription. Desktop Hulu didn't navigate me out of Manage My Account. Downloaded the app to my phone, was able to sign and searched New York Rangers, got ESPN+ listings. I think ESPN+ add-on is needed and then it can be accessed via Hulu.
