First of all, I know you missed most of the game, but any puck shot into the chest protector a goalie is going hold on to. No shot will bounce off your chest protector and go 30 feet out.
Secondly, earlier in the game there was a hard, low shot that hit Talbot in the pad and he kicked it out 20 feet in front of him. Same that Hank does. This is a result of most goal pads these days being made of light materials which cause much larger rebounds opposed to the older pads which sucked in and absorbed most of the shots.
Hank deflects rebounds to the sides, just like all goalies are fundamentally taught to do. However, many times a shot comes in hard and you don't always have the ability to deflect to the sides, and its going to come out in front. First rule is to always make the save, and IF you can control the rebound, or hold on to the puck you do. If it does come out, this is where you rely on your teammates in front of you to help clear the rebounds.
