I actually liked the forward lines to start the game (with the exception of the fact that we need another 3rd liner, Fast should be on the 4th, and Howden and Haley should both be in HFD). Would like to see them again, despite the loss.

Agreed with folks on the PP. Gimme a LH triggerman on the right and move Panarin back to the left. Zibby can either play the bumper or be the triggerman on the 2nd unit. Also, bring Fox back to PP1.

The team had that horrid start and even with the 4 goals against if their PP can come up with a few goals the game was right there.

End of the first PP when it was just 2-0. A goal there changes the game.

Two PPs back to back beginning of the third. Score on those and it’s 4-3.

Yeah idk what that was about. He pulled his stick away from the puck like we was trying to avoid scoring.

Looks like he had money on Vegas or something bc it was so obvious he avoided scoring a tap in goal.
I thought there was someone like right behind him so I thought maybe he was pulling back so that guy could get the goal

But then I remember Kreider is just a dolt

Honestly if I’m Panarin I say something. Coach I gotta be in that spot. We want to make the playoffs? Let’s stop screwing around. Can’t throw away games because of idiotic shit like this

I just for the life of me do not understand why you’re going to put Panarin anywhere on the PP other than whatever spot he’s going to be his best at.
He wants Panarin and Zibanejad both as shooters. I'm not a fan of it either but the PP has still been scoring. They're not on some drought or anything. This board makes it sound like they haven't scored a power play goal since October.

Panarin isn't a shooter on the right though, that's the issue. The PP hasn't been scoring since they went to this set up and this set up is the thing people aren't happy with.

Zibanejad has been back one game before today and the PP has been 1/7 since. Stats aside, just watching the PP today you could see Panarin repeatedly orienting himself in order to shoot. By the time he got the shot off everyone knew it was coming, including the goalie. The benefit of having shooters on their offside on the PP is that they can get their shots off before the goalie can get over.

To each his own, this all just gets a capital-M 'Meh' for me in terms of current issues. If/when the PP goes cold, he'll change it. They practically had a PPG tonight but Kreider decided not to score, and I think against Boston they scored like a second after the PP ended.

3. The NHL memorializes every goal and win with the relevant puck, hockey tape, and a sharpie. I asked the guy in the box why. "I don't know, I'm just doing as told."

likely, to sell as game-used souvenirs, or sell to a trading card company for them to cut up and put on cards.

Well PP2 scores vs the Devils and PP1 couldn’t capitalize at all vs Boston, NJ and tonight.

Obviously it’s not as inept as Rangers teams past but I just think this unit is not working so might as well change it now. You can create more dangerous chances all around the ice by having the half wall guys both be one time options so the PKers have to respect that. When Panarin isn’t a one time threat on that far side it’s one less thing the PK doesn’t have to worry about.

In my opinion:

Kreider
Panarin-Zib-Kakko
Fox

Lemieux/Chytil
TDA-Strome-Buch
Trouba

Quinn is forgetting that Strome is a FILL IN. He did admirably but we hung on for dear life waiting for Mika.

now that Mika is back you don’t just keep rolling with Strome. He’s the far inferior player. So shoe horning him onto PP1. Keeping him with Panarin instead of the original plan when signing Panarin creating a real Line 1 in Panarin Mika Kakko.

snap the f*** out of it. Drop Strome back to pp2. Back to the third line (yes our second line of Kreider Chytil Buchnevich is really good) and be thankful he did a great job while we needed him to. But never a job that was supposed to be permanent

PP has 5 goals in last 8 games FYI. The longest this team has gone without a PPG is 3 games.

Team has been freebasing PDO recently, they were due for a game like this.

But on the other hand, the 1st PP unit has only scored 1 goal in the 4 games since Mika came back (and we've had a LOT of opportunities)

It's been said multiple times but absolutely positively vehemently no reason for Panarin to be put on his off-wing on the powerplay.

Literally has one of the best one-timers in the league and his own coach neutralizes it before the opposing team even puts out a penalty kill lineup. Every time the pointman passed to Panarin at the top of the circle, Panarin had to pivot before anything else. Just completely took away his shot.

There's no deep analysis needed here. Keep it simple.

2 scoring lines. 1 'checking' line.

Zibs in high slot on the PP.
Panarin where he belongs.
Kakko on the right.

Please and Thank You.

If we're questioning it, you know the players are. That's not good for morale. You blowup the entire lineup, that was scoring, because Zibs gets back? What logic

Other than that, watching the defense has been Ruff.

I flew all the way from Phoenix for this?

This game was a crying shame. I have come to realize, other teams don't beat us, we beat ourselves. If we play the way we're suppose to, we are in every game and more than likely, on the winning side. But if we keep shooting ourselves in the foot, it is tough to overcome that. Consistency is a tough nut to crack. Kakko, Buchy, Kreids, Trouba, and Skjei look good one day and the next like dog crap. Panarin and Zibad are the only two, who consistently play great two-way games.

Strome is still playing solidly, with and without the puck. Just because he hasn't been keeping pace at a PPG don't overlook his effort. It is still there. And Quinn is deservedly rewarding him. With Zibad back, Strome is averaging better than 20 minutes per game.

  • Hank kept this (mildly) respectable
  • Panarin continued to be a bright spot
  • ADA looked good offensively
