This is what I'd do and I dont think its that far fetched tbh

1. It's probably going to cost you a 2nd to get rid of Tarasenko or Holl. At least a 1st to get rid of Compher or Copp. No one is giving you assets in exchange for horrific contracts.

2. Buchelnikov is under contract in Russia next yr.

3. Why do you want to trade cheap 24yr old Johansson for a expensive non-elite 30yr old?

What has Marner won? He’s on a loaded Leafs team and besides his scoring he seems to be known as someone who’s a bit of a baby. As for Tavares, same thing, what has he won? And again, we don’t need another past his prime soft player.
Okay who exactly do you suggest getting that that’s actually available that will be better options than them? I mean at this point we need to get to the playoffs first before worrying about winning the cup. I can’t believe how picky some people are when we literally have missed the playoffs for almost a decade straight. Jesus it’s ridiculous

I definitely disagree on the Compher/Copp comment. With the cap the way it is and the way it’s going I think you can get a little bit of value for those guys, they aren’t negative assets

yeah, with the cap going up so much I wouldn't be surprised to see teams willing to splurge on a 3C. Especially if they miss out on some other move.

Sam Bennett would be the corner piece of free agent haves, for me. I would offer sheet Jack McBain from Utah and/or sign Trent Fredric. I’d also re-sign Kane for another year.

No and no.

All 4 are absolutely enormously negative assets.

And more cap space 2/3 yrs down the line is a chance for good teams to add great players...... not to give UP ASSETS and $5M in cap space for obviously AHL-level players

Uh. I hate them too but they aren’t AHL players lol. Just overpaid 3rd liners. With the cap at 100M they’re fairly paid.

Sam Bennett scores at the same pace and is about to get 7M+. Yes his physical play is a big part of that but let’s not act like these two are 10 pt players.

If their jerseys said Watson and Shine and they had two-way contracts you'd be complaining about how Stevie-Y didn't sign better call-up vets for GR this summer

Copp, Compher, Tarasenko, Gus, Holl and even Ras = all basic AHL vets. Almost $30M worth.

THAT ^ is why we suck. Can throw Lyon, Berggren, Motte, Petry and formerly Veleno and Fischer in there too.

Yeah sorry I also consider myself a pessimist around these parts but this is just delusional. Andrew Copp has played 700 NHL games. To suggest he’s an AHL vet is simply jsut objectively false.

The argument against Tavares (or Bennet) might be Kasper. He's done well as a scoring line center here to end the season, and it might be prudent to just pencil him in for that next year and put that money elsewhere, like the blueline.
The team needs a 1LW if Kasper plays center. My choice would be Bennett, but I am absolutely gonna hate the price tag.

I would be okay giving Mazur or Danielson a look there, too. I see people penciling Mazur into the fourth line, but that's where I'd push Compher and Tank (if they aren't moved) before pushing a kid there.

Agree about Bennett. Feels like a contract that is likely to age very poorly, but also one of the few guys who adds a lot of what we want to add.

What 4 are you exactly talking about. It’s laughable that you think Copp and Compher are AHL level players. I get you don’t like them but come on

And how is that going so far? Stamkos had a ppg last year as well.
Is that the extent of your critique? Or did you have anything substantive add? How did the UFA signing of Hossa go for the 'Hawks? Or how about Tampa signing St. Louis after being bought-out by Calgary? Is your point just to list counterpoints and come up with no way forward? Tell me the trade or other FA that will fill the 2C role?

No, the point is signing 35 year olds to bad deals is bad short term and long term and doesn't necessarily improve us as a team. What are you on about with St. Louis? He wasn't a star player when TB signed him, he was a player who hadn't made it yet.

We're going to have to hope that Compher has a bounce back year next year. Bury Holl in the minors. Retain cap to move Tarasenko or potentially ride his contract out if we get Orlov.

Sign Bennett 7X7.25
Resign Kane 1X 4.5
trade two 2nds and berggren for Mario Ferrero OR sign Orlov 2X 5 mil

Promote Mazur, Danielson AND ASP full time

If going with ASP is too scary, then signing a Trevor van Reimsdyk/Cody Ceci to help with pk for the short turn.

Bennett-Larkin-Raymond
DBC-Kasper-Kane
Danielson-Copp/Compher-Tarasenko/Soderblom
Mazur-Compher/Copp-Rasmussen

Motte

Orlov/ferrero-Seider
Edvinsson-ASP
Chiarot-Johansson

Gustafsson

Mrazek, Cossa, Talbot

That contract would kill us for Bennett down the road and let’s be real nobody would choose to leave sunny Florida with less taxes who also happen to be the team you won a cup With

IF I was a player I’d rather take 6 per 7 in Florida than 7.25 in Detroit

As for compher if the hawks are willing and don’t get serious upgrades at C and Bert is mostly bottom 6 rest of the way I’d seriously try to work out a deal there . He’s shown chemistry with larkin and Raymond and plays a style we need and only has 2 yrs left

It looks like Gavrikov is expected to extend in LA..

Other than throwing a bag at Marner I really don’t like much of this UFA class. Maybe Provorov. It’s slim pickings.
DeBrincat-Larkin-Marner
Berggren-Kasper-Raymond
Söderblom-Copp-Tarasenko or Brandsegg-Nygård
Rasmussen-Compher-Mazur

Edvinsson-Seider
Chiarot-ASP

The big thing is finally having NHL quality depth down the middle. One more year of Chiarot, but move him down to some easier matchups as the stay at home guy for ASP.

Marner levels up on where Kane is at right now and gives us a legit scoring line capable of 80ish goals. I have no strong feeling on Tank, could take him and put him on the third line if MBN can't lock down a roster spot, or trade him with some salary retention if MBN is ready to contribute.
