I just don't understand how you can be mad at those contracts.
It's not that those dollars are hurting financial flexibility.

Actually, if you overpay 5 guys by 1M each, you lack 5M you could spend for another player. So overpaying isn't the smartest thing to do, even if the players are good. And if they even suck, it only gets worse.

As much as it is great work by SY to extend Mo and Ray for only 8 or 8.5M/year, it is bad work to pay all these Comphers and Chiarots all those millions.

please name a gm in the history of professional sports that has never signed a poor contract

But when your team puts up a historically bad season, is at the bottom of the league for years and has just drafted a "reach" at number 6 named Moritz Seider, guys don't want to play for you. So you have to overpay a bit to get "mid" players but one's worth the investment to help bring the future rookies along.

It raises the appeal of your club to other free agents, because they see a nucleus of vet's who work hard and a stable of prospects being brought along in a proper way. Then you land your Cats & Kanes.

As this thing chugs along, those vets that cost you "5M" come off the books and actually netted you better FA's and better players willing to be traded to the club.

It's an entire process. It's what rebuilding looks like.

not really when its an rebuild era when were not competing and no big ufa would want to come here anyway , plus most big ufa are older and get long term so they would be past prime when our young prospects like kasper/danielsson/cossa/asp/etc are ready . mean while these middle roster players you speak of are helping to establish team culture as the hard working team players they are . guess what ? yzerman knows better than you about running a hockey team as you may have noticed by his results in tbay , and by all his draft picks that are doing great

I'd argue they also aren't all poor contracts. We needed guys like compher and copp up front, we needed chiarot on the blue line. And we had to pay a premium in ufa because we didn't have them in the system.
one could also argue that the debrincat, kane, seider, and raymond's of the world wouldn't have wanted to sign here if we didn't have the base talent level of copp, compher, chiarot

Which team doesn't have 5-10m in poorly spent cap dollars?

Also at what point were we competitive and needed that cap space and missed out on a big Ufa because of bad signings?

However we do have 26m in cap space this off season. Which we can use to land a bigger fish to get us to the next level ie Marner or Rantanen, or second tier, chychrun, Duchene, Granlund, Tavares.

But keep yelling at clouds

The funny thing is if we just wait maybe a year or two more which sucks we will be a contender from great drafting and development but we can't wait Lmao. I just hope we don't do something dumb af because we are antsy to crawl into the playoffs.

I mean I could argue this past offseason that we could have had a better team coming in if we hadn’t spent on a couple bad contracts.

Then you'd be arguing with a wall.

You have to consider we still were not a destination and the free agents you wanted didn't want you??

I can't help but think our window doesn't really begin to open until Cossa or Augustine are a fixture and ASP takes place on the D - would be nice if Mazur, Lombardi, Buchelnikov, MBN or Danielson hit as an offensive weapon. Agree with Yzerland that we should be patient one more year - nothing crazy, unless its a piece that puts us in a better long-term position.
