Just got done watching some highlight videos of Cozens. If these rumors are true I'd be happy to get rid of quite a few players to get him. Very few of our players are as skilled as him, and he's not afraid to shoot.
The problem with Cozens is a few times a year he 'looks' great scoring a goal, but he's just bad, really bad.
I posted a few threads about him, his metrics are awful and match up with the 'eye test' when you watch is everyday game, not just the highlights. If you didn't see it, click on below:
24/25 Waivers/Rumors/TDL Thread.
Here is also a screenshot of what you get with him (there are dozens and dozens like this from just this year and last year):
Buffalo is shorthanded, they have the PK box set up. Everyone is in their sports, 1,2,3....except there is a wide open spot near the blue line on the near side? Cozens spot was up high on the near side.
Cozens (#24) decided to chase the puck to the point, then when it went to the other side he chased the puck all the way to the other side (going right past his own guy), then it went into the far corner and he went there (even though the Sabres D-man was there).
All the while there is huge area wide open where he should have been. What happens? The puck gets to that area, the Pitt player takes his time, walks into the goalie, and it leads to an easy goal.
Some will say you can 'coach' that out of him. Well, 3 or 4 coaches later with the Sabres, he still does it all the time (notice how no-one else on the ice was doing that, so its not coaching, its cozens)
Again, I live in the Niagara Region so I get more Leafs and Sabres games than the rest of the league combined, and Cozens does stuff like this 50+ times a season. He has 'raw' talent, but his head can't stop playing backyard pond hockey. I'm talking mind-boggling bad stuff that normally is coached out of kids by the time they reach high school hockey. I've watched games and thought to myself "what the heck is he doing?"
He has the potential (not likely but the potential) to score 10 -12 more goals per year than a typical 3rd line center. But he costs you 10-15 more than an average guy defensively, plus he doesn't get his linemates involved in the offensive zone at all, he has no vision for where his own linemate are most of the time.
If, IF he plays 3rd line wing (with no Center responsibilities) and is not used on the PK or the PP, he can be really good in that role. Do you want to pay $7m per year for that though? MAYBE 2nd line wing.
