Buffalo might want to move on from Cozens are the rumors ? he has not looked good this year or for large portions of last season.

I wouldn’t mind buying low on him… you’ve gotta break some eggs to make an omelette.
There's no buying low on a struggling $7M player. Even if you get him for cheap, if he doesn't improve those $7M will be an anchor. He got that contract because of one season. Since then it's been a season and a half of mediocrity. Would rather steer clear of that.

Considering about 50% of our caphit is spent on players that are entirely dead cap space… it wouldnt be hard to throw them an anchor that is equal in size.

You wouldn’t dump Compher, Rasmussen (8.3M combined) and some picks/prospects for the upside of a Cozens ?

Those contracts will be mostly gone in the next 1-2 years, Cozens' lasts a lot longer than that. During the years where using the cap ceiling as efficiently as possible will (hopefully) matter to us.

Compher and Rasmussen still have 3 years left.
Cozens has 5, but he is only 23.

For the extra 2 year gamble you get a whole lot more upside. And if the cap keeps going up… by that time a 7 mill contract will be equivalent of 5.5 mill today.

I’d take my chances, he has pedigree.

There's some common ground for a modest Sabres-Wings trade that doesn't include Cozens or Byram or anyone with an NTC who might nix a trade to either team. Rasmussen, Lyon, Berggren, Veleno are all possibles for the Sabres. Samuelsson, Peterka and perhaps Quinn would be of interest to Wings. A Wings D prospect (Wallinder/Buium) or AlJo for a Sabres F prospect (Rosen/Ostlund) is also not far off a decent match.

Rasmussen contributes enough for what his role on the team and cap hit are. Not sure why he's being mentioned here.

And Compher's not been that far off from a $5M player in Detroit, barring a slow first half of this season (though he is still 0.5ppg despite that). I anticipate an overall improvement in the team with McLellan so Compher should be better going forward too.

Both of those guys play at or near their respective cap hits, Cozens has not played like a $7M player in a while. Granted he's also been on a bad team but either way there's no indication yet that he'll return to what he showed in his 68pt season. It'd be one thing to take out a flyer on a struggling high cap hit player with only a couple years left under contract, I just think there's too much risk in taking on such a player who still has term on their contract. Don't want to be holding that bag when Edvinsson, ASP, Cossa, etc need to get paid.

The real dead weight contracts are Copp, Tarasenko, Kane, Holl, Petry, Gustafsson, and Husso (26.87M combined). Chiarot, while not quite dead weight, is slightly overpaid at 4.75M but not by much. And then there's still Abdelkader's 1M buyout cost. All of these things expire within the next 2 years. So as more and more youth on ELC contracts are incorporated into the team over the next couple years, we'll also be freeing up 32M+ in cap space. That's a great position to be in. Better to reserve that money to pay Edvinsson and Co. and have some set aside to go after bigger free agents rather than taking on a big risk with an expensive reclamation project.

Rasmussen is mentioned because he is one of the few pieces that we have that could return a much bigger piece, and isn't part of our immediate future.

Ras presents the exact kind of qualities for a new team that GM love. He's young so there's still 'potential', he's huge and strong (we know better), he's gritty and plays hard in the corners (deer on ice), he's shown incredible flashes of offensive ability, etc. etc. and he's cost controlled for the next several years

He's exactly the kind of guy you include in a Player + Prospect + Pick to land a real player

Looking down the Buffalo roster, they seem to be shy on some veteran RHD (and in the farm) and LH centers and are a quite young group overall. Seeing as both Ras and JV have played center and all over the lineup, they could be of interest to Buffalo with Greenway on the LTIR, as Ras has size and JV will actually hit and is not exactly small.

As I understand the NTC, they now have to be registered with NHL HQ, so the players cannot pick the teams on the fly. Trouba would have been unique, as he was just putting his together, but the resident Wings should have theirs firmly in place.

I can see Buffalo moving on from one younger LHD (Bryam or Samuelson) as 4 higher priced LHD on the roster is not optimal unless one of them is natural on their off side (it does happen) for one of JV/Ras plus maybe an Al-Jo, the other off the wall one I could see would be Holl to add some veteran presence for a couple of seasons as 3RD for the Sabres.

I think the only way SY move on from Lyon this year is when they toss in the towel on the season, and I doubt the Sabres will be the landing spot at the TDL.

Like you, I only see modest things as SY will want his chosen roster top perform, the new coach should unlock things a little, so anything that happens will most likely be a swap of underperforming pieces that hopefully a new team gives them new life.

Neither team is truly out of it yet, the last WC spot is currently the Sens at 4 games over 0.500 with a lot of games to play, so you never know, maybe a bigger swap is in play.

Cayden primeau on waivers ... I know it wont happen with cossa in g.r but im almost tempted to trade lyon now if we can get what we want and pick him up

had alot of promise at one point, 25 6'3 and local kid not to mention ex redwing Keith's kid

Again wont happen but if we dealt lyon to a cash strapped contender and took advantage with his low salary and got a 2nd and claimed him I wouldnt hate it

I wanted Holland to draft Samuelsson in 2018 with the Veleno pick. I'd love to have him, although I see him and Byram having similar price tags. Not necessarily due to skill level, but moreso that Sammy is their only true left handed defensive defenseman.

I was actually told up here last night in Ottawa, where there’s all kinds of speculation going on, that Ben Chiarot is almost certain to be traded and even pretty soon. That Edmonton and Winnipeg are two front runners because he’ll waive to both, and Detroit will retain
👀👀
Chiarot(50% retain) for WPG 1st 2025

WPG 1st 2025 + Gustafsson + AnJo for Byram

It's probably gonna be a low level hockey trade, both teams need scoring, they need a goalie, Red Wings need defensemen.

So something like Lyon + cap dump (Gus/Holl) for Jokiharju.

jesus lmao man we have so much trash... a mid pick for kane .. giving up picks yet again to move tarasenko lmao at that point I'd rather hang on one more year and hope he gets a lot start and then move him. Enough freebies

said it before... if a contender comes offering a first for Talbot I'd resign lyon and move talbot without a seconds thought

would give us an extra pick to pull another debrincat type move

Yeah, Jets have cap space, so they're not gonna give a 1st for retention. Maybe a 2nd.

Trade Chiarot then both AlJo and Gus will have to play every game. That would guarantee a top 4 pick.
I'd rather move gus and get to see tuomisto and wallinder come in for some games each. I'm so over gus

You want a top 4 pick ... call up lagesson rest of the season and keep holl on the 2nd pair lol

Nobody wants Gus. He's heading for a buyout if McLellan can't fix his motivational issues.
