Salary Cap: 24-25 Salary Thread Crosbicles Volume MXVII: Marner Watch

Canes just don't have the physicality to get to the finals. Yes scoring seems to be an issue but they simply are not able to step it up vs the more physical teams in the playoffs. Have some talented D but there is a drop after that. Pens need to keep adding here.

Am I the only one confused where all the Canes depth on D disappeared to? They seemed to always be swimming in D talent, and most of them are gone. Slavin is life and Nikishkin looks like a future star, but there are so many they cycled through before that.
They let them go to UFA.

Pesces - Devils - actually fine letting him go
Skjie - Predators - should have kept him.

Losing 2 legit top 4 pairing players in an off-season.

I still don't know how they convinced Jacob Slavin to take so little. 8 years just under 52 million. I don't get it.
But I suppose they expect discounts everywhere.

IMO the Canes should have just paid Pesce to re-sign and not signed Walker. I don't really understand the Walker signing, he's a pretty mediocre player and they already had a #4 RD with Chatfield. Had they kept Pesce, they'd have a defensive anchor for that 2nd pair that you could put with Slavin as the ultimate shutdown pair if you wanted to run with that.

With adding Karlsson, they could have had:

Slavin-Karlsson
Nikishin-Pesce
Gostisbehere-Chatfield

Which looks like a really good defense to me.

Either you outscore a bullying team, or you match their bullying. Carolina is capable of neither as presently constructed. Edmonton can do both, as an example. We used to do the former.

Dundon, imo, is a big problem there. He talks about wanting a superstar but at the same time keeps his change in his pocket.

That said, hopefully EK65 wants no part of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Canes are the Islanders under Trotz. Stingy defensive team with some shutdown defenders who play a structured game, but lack the offensive punch to beat the truly elite teams who also play structured hockey when it matters.

Aho's a great player, but he's more in that second tier of 1Cs. And he's their most talented forward by a mile (largely because Svechnikov seems so inconsistent). Unless you're absolutely stacked elsewhere, you're not winning a Cup with Aho as your top offensive performer.

Islanders' success was mostly good goaltending more than a good defense. Carolina is the opposite with a very good team defense. Goaltenders have been average at best.

It'll be interesting to see how they improve over the next few years.

I think you're downplaying Seth Jarvis who I think could be a Hornqvist type.

Nikishin legitimately could be a stud. And then they have Blake and Nadeau.

The real issue is their center depth. You can't have Koko, Roslovic and Staal as your 2,3,4 in today's NHL.

An injury prone, physical player who has already peaked. 10 million in this economic uncertainty. Wow.

We going to get another lockout.

I'm not going to accuse anyone of anything, but this is like the 5th black defenseman I've seen you say sucks and I'm actually noticing a bit of a trend here.

POJ, Miller, Aitcheson, Dumba, Chatfield....there's something all of these guys have in common.
Well POJ sucks, Dumba sucks and Miller sucked this year. Also, isn’t Dumba Filipino? Dumba is Filipino and German lol.

The soft headed wanker finally realized he has a fiance that he's been dragging along and never marrying so he decided to show her all the cool sites in Europe to hopefully quell the marriage talk.
I do find it funny how you're lauding Sid for enjoying some more time in Europe and you're not wrong on that and all but the reason he was there in the first place is he's such a hockey obsessed robot that he felt the need to play in the world championships just to keep himself sharp  .

He's probably still skating out there even while enjoying time with his gf. He never stops.

Lol was it reported he was skating out there? I thought he was maybe just enjoying life for once. I think the fact that he signed on for that idiotic NHL show on Amazon or whatever it is, shows that he's trying to loosen up a little and let the media in a little more now that he's realizing the time is really winding down and he has a couple of seasons left.

Cheap f*** owner and a supposed genius GM that is just some epic tit with a bad jerry curl. Those two tag-teamed that team into shit.

I hadn't heard anything about him skating out there but it wouldn't surprise me if he is. Dude always gets a skate in lol.

And that 3rd pair is hot garbage. Ghost is just Matt Grzelcyk under a different name and Chatfield belongs on the 4th pair, if that.
Ghost is a lot better than Grzelcyk and Chatfield played solid 2nd pair hockey all year after playing solid 3rd pair hockey before that. I'm not going to judge him too harshly from the postseason since everyone who played with Orlov struggled enormously.

God bless Hornqvist but Jarvis is a lot better than him already (and will continue to be).

I think we're being way too hard on the Canes here. Skjei is 30, had a horrible season in Nashville, and has 6 years left on his $7M deal. I would have kept Pesce but Canes fans hated him so not sure the deal there.

They've been one of the most successful teams in the NHL in the past 5 years and are explicitly trying to address the star-power problem. This was a reset year for them and they still kicked the Caps' ass in round 2 and lost to a basically dynasty Panthers team who are basically the ideal version of the Canes. They have the assets and space to keep improving.

I wouldn’t mind signing Roslovic to a short term deal since we don’t have anything in the pipeline at center.

I don’t know about this season but last 31 out of 32 teams were profitable. Arizona being the exception.

UFA doesn’t look the same as it used to. There are far fewer impact players making it to free agency. So yes teams are going to vastly overpay but there are less opportunities to.

That's just been the FA landscape for the entire cap era.

FA has always been a pitfall, GMs simply can't help themselves. It's not now, nor has it ever been a way to build a team. But that won't stop GMs from throwing like $10M AAV at a complementary piece like Bennett or $13M+ at Marner who isn't The Guy™.

I don't want to sign any UFA that isn't on a 1 year deal tbh. Not commenting on any of these guys and their abilities, but guys like Roslovic are going to get downright ludicrous UFA contracts with the big jump in the cap. I'd rather just steer clear entirely.

Even with Marner, I'm regularly swinging between "he's too good to not go after" and "he's going to get a ridiculous contract that the Penguins shouldn't give him".

Interesting name thrown out on the Athletic trade board, Logan Mailloux is a trade candidate for the Habs due to being blocked in their system. Would people here do something around Blomqvist for Mailloux? The Habs seem to be a bit thinner in net than they are on defense, while the Penguins have Murashov even if they trade Blomqvist.

That said, they did just sign Jacob Fowler who looks like a really damn good goalie prospect, so I'm not sure they'd be super interested in Blomqvist either.
