That would make the Penguins worse with having to pay Marner $13+ million in the cap, which would be good for their draft position.

McKenna being both better and cheaper than Marner would hurt their draft position more than Marner would.
Ugh.

You're just arguing a bad position to argue. Going after Marner would be f***ing stupid.

Lose now, win later

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Amazing contribution to the discussion, thank you for adding it!

Marner is a top talent in the league and the Penguins would be absolute morons to say no to him because "what if he makes our draft pick worse?!?!?!". Any top-5 pick you'd make would be lucky to end up as good as Marner.

Adding a 28 yearold 14M+ player to this team makes no f***ing sense. He's not good enough to win them a Cup and too good to let them tank. Then, in 3 years, he'll be in his 30s w/o Sid and not top picks to help him out.

How f***ing hard is that to understand?

1. I already addressed the "too good to let them tank" argument. That same argument applies to McKenna and how winning the lottery for him would hurt their ability to tank.
2. Marner will still be a top player in his early 30s, why are we acting like that's old?
3. The Penguins will have 2 top picks from this draft plus likely a top pick in 2026 regardless of whether they add Marner or not.
4. Marner is and will be better than most top picks the Penguins will get in the next few drafts. Saying no to a guaranteed top player because "he'll hurt our draft pick" is just that Family Guy mystery box meme

"The Penguins would be stupid to sign Marner, because that will turn a #5 overall pick that they're hoping will turn into a Marner caliber player into a #10 overall pick plus having Marner signed long term"

Having good players is never a negative.

A team hasn’t used the method of tanking and turned it into a cup since the Kings won in 2014. Unless you want to use our B2Bs. When we won with a 1st that was a random lottery for Sid and Letang who was a 3rd round pick.

You addressed it, but you're wrong.

How can you argue that McKenna will be the same as Marner in 2 years and that Marner will be better than any Pens pick for the next 3+ years in the same post?

Again, you're arguing just to argue.

Because it's incredibly unlikely the Penguins will actually get McKenna in the draft because of the draft lottery. If you win the lottery and get McKenna, he will do the same thing in terms of screwing with your draft position that people are saying about Marner. If you don't win the lottery, it's most likely that Marner will be better than any player you'd pick there. Both of those are true.

If you want to argue against signing Marner because he will "screw with their draft picks" or whatever, you should also be arguing that you don't want to win the McKenna lottery next year because he'll also "screw with their draft picks" in the same way Marner would. In fact, he'd likely screw with those picks more.

The best outcomes are either both signing Marner and winning the McKenna lottery to enable them to have a rapid turnaround with adding 2 star players, or doing neither of those two things to ensure the "tank" lasts as long as possible to accrue as many high picks as possible.

Give me an honest contract for Marner to sign here over the 31 other NHL teams. Hint: You're wrong if it's under 14.5M and more than 5 years.

Now that you've done that, do you get that giving him that contract makes zero sense for the Pens?

Why does it matter if the Penguins pay him a ton? They have a ton of cap space and no one to pay.

We're not getting McKenna anyways as long as Sid is on the team. It would take injuries for that to happen or great draft lottery luck.

Penguins should have a ton of cap moving forward. Don’t really see the issue in locking in a top ten wing. NYR did the same with Panarin.

Yea, don't understand the concern about cap space. It's not like we have a bunch of 22 year old superstars that are all gonna want $12+ million contracts. Our highest paid, and best, player only makes $8.7 million. If marner legitimately wants to sign here, give him whatever he wants lol
