What could he have done differently? Not taken the job. Most Canadian fans who knew his resumé did not want him in that position. Very few will want him until he shows some success while at Pittsburgh, regardless of whether it's warranted. Many people (including myself) believe that Dubas was completely propped up by the media in Toronto, and that most of those accolades/exposure that he received were manufactured by operating in a big market.
No one is claiming he's the sole reason why Canada lost in the fashion that they did. The way in which he described how he constructed his roster was predicated on bringing a lot of talent from the 4 nations to this specific tournament (a somewhat flawed observation since it was an international tournament on big ice/different officiating, but I digress). We're obviously not privy to all the players who are either invited or not, since it is usually determined by past invitations that are continuously accepted or the contrary (e.g. Nick Suzuki, for instance, has never accepted). There are players who are asked at the end of the season media interviews whether they would accept an invitation to the world championship. Everything else is just speculation.
Is it a little unfair to throw shade at Dubas because of what happened at the WC? Sure. I, along with others, need to vent after a complete disaster of a game. I have never been a Dubas advocate and this was just more accelerant to add to the fire.
