I would argue that given Jarry's history, he's probably not having that sort of rebound unless the team plays a far better game in front of him than general, particularly in terms of keeping the net clear. His problem, beyond just probably not being a good pro in terms of staying focused and committed through the long grind, is he seems to struggle with a lot of traffic and scrambling and after a while his game breaks down as a result.

Yeah dude seems to get distracted and fall apart when too much is going on in front of him.

Not uh... the best trait to have as a goaltender.

Another name I'd throw out as a potential "buy low and flip later" option: Mason Marchment from Dallas. Dallas 100% needs to clear out cap this off-season due to the Rantanen extension and Marchment's $4.5 million AAV seems like an obvious one they won't need to pay to get rid of.

I don't think the Penguins would get paid something to take him on, but paying a 3rd for Marchment to help the Stars with the cap, play him in the top-6 for half a season and then trade him as a rental next year for possibly a 1st+ makes a lot of sense to me.

I actually don't see Marner as a guy they would pursue given already having a bunch of small playmakers.
Yeah, that's a fair concern. My contention was you're balancing that out with Martone, Iginla, and Crouse. If they opt for a center like Desnoyers or Frondell, it could help balance that out as well. I know their owner wants the splash as the new kid on the block. It will interesting to see how much that will influence Armstrong. Is it a "gee it'd be nice" or a command?

I think Marner would be fine with any top 6 line combination. I'd build a 2nd line of Martone-Hayton-Marner myself but I get tingles thinking about a Keller-Cooley-Marner line.

Very much in the mold of Reilly Smith for a 3rd. He's a guy you can easily flip as well. I'd also look into Dumba+Bourque for a 3rd or a prospect (Pono? Poulin?). That would solve just as many issues for them.

No doubt Bourque will be a target for offer sheets. Dallas has little room and a ton of guys to resign. Benn, Dads, Duchene, and Granlund. Granted, Benn should come back cheap which could help give extra money to the others but us taking Bourque and Dumba gives them an extra $4.75 mil to work with. That said, if I'm Dadonov, Duchene, and Granlund, I'd probably take a little less to stay on that team. They should be solid contenders for the next several years.

How is Marchment a “buy-low” candidate given he’s big, physical, signed to a very low cap hit with the cap going up, and just had 47 points in 62 games?

He looks like a guy that gets a 1st + prospect imo

Marchment? Yes, please.

Dumba + Bourque? No thanks. One is expensive washed-up garbage and the other is vastly overrated but "he young!!!!". Bourque isn't remotely worth acquiring if there's a 10-ton anchor attached to any deal for him.

Because Dallas is completely screwed with the cap and have to move out money to be cap compliant after the Rantanen extension.

Same exact thing that happened with Smith in Vegas, who was moved for a 3rd after having 56 points in 78 games in 2022-2023.

There's a lot more cap space in the NHL now tho.

The cap went up for everyone. Like 25 teams can afford Marchment. And like 10-15 probably seriously consider him.

Hamilton would be pretty good there

But doesn’t that just make Dallas’s cap situation worse since the cap hits wipe each other out and you now have another roster spot to fill?

I think conceptually the idea is to open up a spot for the Devils in their top 4 D for Nemec and they want gritty man Mason Marchment because they too tiny and weak.

I understand it from New Jersey's POV but I don't see how that cap works for the Stars, even if Seguin does go on LTIR.

Along those same lines: Dallas is likely going to have to pay to move Dumba to clear cap. He's got a year left at 3.5m, so he's off our books before it matters. I'd take him off their hands as a sweetener to get a Borque deal done.

Sure ain't.

Although tbf, I don't think I've seen a goalie that didn't have a weak spot with some sort of high danger chance. Feels like either they're big dudes who do well with traffic but don't want to be asked to move post to post too much, or they're smaller quicker dudes who don't really want to deal with a lot of traffic. And that if you make the f***er work and start getting goals through to f*** with their confidence, they all start falling apart.

I'm idly curious as to what happens with him next season tbh. From a distance, he gives me a pretty crappy vibe in terms of having the right pro mentality, but every now and again something lights a fire under him and he'll be a genuinely good goalie until that fire wears off again. His play after getting sent to the AHL is a pretty good example. But does he take that experience with him through the offseason and come out swinging, or does he get all complacent again?

I don't see a spot for Dumba. He's ass at this point and they already have Timmins as the 3rd pair RD.

I think they should be looking for a LW type of buy low/cap dump target, that's the only position that really makes sense with the rest of their roster.

Jarry gonna go All Star mode from Thanksgiving to the TDL and ruin the tank
The entire team is going to rebound without Sullivan coaching his dipshit ways. The hope is he coaches his dipshit ways for the Rangers so if our pick is low because firing Sullivan is an immediate glow up, that he does his usual dumbf***ery for the Rangers to gift us a lottery pick anyway.

I feel like he will rebound.

I also hope they hire a new goalie coach to really make sure no other goalie has issues like they have been having under Chiodo the last few years.
