I honestly don't get what people are expecting us to do this summer.
I'm expecting us to move out some or all of Karlsson, Rust, Rakell if we get value for them, and flip as many of those assets we get plus those we already have for young players in or ready for the NHL, in service of making the playoffs by the 2026-2027 season and making some noise by 2027-2028. Veterans give way to youth everywhere appropriate.

I just don't see how you are able to move Rust, Rakell and EK65 all in one offseason.

*If we get value.

Realistically I think we probably move one this summer, one at the deadline, the final next summer. Something like that. But none of them make it to opening night 2026.

See this is why I'm not opposed to signing Marner. We need to get talent into the lineup any way we can get it. Beggars can't be choosers.

People want to sit here and turn their noses up all in the vain hope of having a shot at McKenna.

If we can get any kind of talent that is not ancient we should be open to it. If it's an old player the only reason to take them is Hayes-style for picks.

The Caps didn't just sit there and wait for lottery balls to bounce their way. They aggressively added pieces where they could whether young or middle (by hockey standards) aged.

I doubt Mitch has any interest in even coming here but if some reason he did I wouldn't tell him to f off.
Marner is the oldest player I'd add to the roster, but he's 28, he's special, and you're unlikely to get a player his caliber any other way any time soon, so do it.

I think EK's moved this summer, and I think Rakell's dealt by TDL. I just don't see this team moving Rust. They're way too f***in' weird about him.

I think the re exposure I got to the lottery world this year makes me even more ok with Marner than I was before. McKenna is still pretty unlikely if (when) this team sucks next year.

Marner won’t even prevent them from being bad. If he wants to come here, you take him and figure out the rest later.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if none of them are moved to start the season. Kinda doubt Dubas is going to want to knee cap his new coach that badly. He'll give the coach a chance to see what they can do with this roster.

I do think one or more is gone by the TDL though.

I think Karlsson is dealt if he gets what he wants. We will run a Letang, Timmons, Brunicke for RD. With Shea/St. Ivany if needed due to injury.

Me seeing lots of DesertPenguin and DesertedPenguin posts and trying to remember they're two different people

I will be in trouble whenever DessertPenguin signs up and starts arguing with me about why cheesecake is a superior food to pancakes

For the hell of it:
Marner signed 7x14m
EK65 2.5m retained to CAR for their 1st and 3rd
CAR 1st, Rust and Poulin to BUF for Byram, signed 7x 8.5m
Rakell to DET for their 1st + a prospect
DET 1st to TBL for Howard
Nick Hague offer sheet at 4.6m, with 2026 2nd going back to Vegas as compensation
Acciari and Ned demoted to clear room (we have cap space, dont need them off the books)

Draft 2 Cs, hope one is ready when Geno retires. Demote Jarry when Murashov is ready, fire Graves into sun when convenient.

The only reason I think EK's gone is because he doesn't want to be here anymore, imo.

I also wouldn't be surprised if all three were here in October, because this team's f***ing stupid and dysfunctional.

Now that Sullivan is gone I don't know why EK wouldn't want to be here unless he just hates losing but he doesn't strike me as a guy who gives a shit about that lol.

Also... Someone sell me on Byram cuz I don't see it, man.
24 yo LHS Defenseman with 5 years of experience in the league already.
38 points last season (36 at even strength) playing a bit under 23min a night
2nd to Dahlin on BUF in TOI/G. Played in all phases including 3rd d in PK TOI

I'll let someone else drop the fancy stat chart, but in summary he looks like a #1/#2 Two Way LD just entering his prime, on a team that has a LD logjam with Dahlin and Power, making him available.

We should hold onto EK65 at least until a) we see what the new coaching staff can produce with this blueline, and specifically with him, and subsequently b) when his value is better than it currently is.

I have been in the keep Rakell and (to a lesser extent) Rust camp all along, mostly because of a) above. Let's see what the new coaching staff does. That said, a Rakell or Rust deal makes more sense if a) Marner signs here and b) we draft Eklund or some other winger 11th. Because at that point we become team donut (no centers). And trading one of those wingers for a young center who can grow with this team makes a ton of sense. Someone like a Konsta Helenius in Buffalo just to name one.

I am also in the camp that we should only bring in one older player in Marner (if he wants to come here) and everybody else should be young (under 25). I might make one exception if there is a quality defensive defenseman who can be had to play next to Karlsson. Remember, whether you love Karlsson (as I do) or want him gone yesterday, everybody wants Karlsson's value to go North. It helps nobody for his play to remain where it is since he joined team Sullivan.
