All the contracts and acquisitons are designed to be flipped.

We are paying nothing besides cap space and setting ourselves up to tank.

Not really sure what else we should be doing at this time or what you are expecting.

The defense is the same exact it was last year, Leddy is just another Grzelcyk.

Also if you're trying to tank, why aren't you selling Karlsson?

Yes. The defense isn't being improved this summer unless we are spending major assets.

I don't see the point in selling EK65 at this junction unless we get a haul.

Also, I don't know you're getting anything of real value this summer for EK, so per your argument why move him?

Or they can aim higher than just trading Acciari for Nick Leddy? Go spend a 2nd on Nick Hague to get an actual improvement to the defense.

If I'm posting my "hope" for what they do this off-season:

Still have $9 million to play with to add another forward if you want insurance on those top-9 LWers. I'd actually probably use that cap space to target a LWer to get paid to take on.

I honestly don't get what people are expecting us to do this summer.
Leverage some draft picks and a player or two for younger talent. Continue accumulating assets. Sign a flippable UFA or two - whether they're flipped this year or next.

I'm not expecting an overnight transformation into a contender, but I do expect some further infusion of young talent.

Okay. So that is why we are trading Rust for 9th overall and Jack Quinn.

Do you expect them to add like 3-4 younger talents? It's simply not happening with the assets they have this summer.

If they somehow add the #9 pick to the team with trading Rust, they 100% have the assets to pull off a quality young player. Hell, if we're talking Rust to Buffalo and they're willing to flip the #9 pick for him, I'd just transition the conversation to something around Rust+ for Byram.

This team should absolutely be able to add a quality young player or two with the Penguins 2 1sts, Rangers 1st, Sabres 1st and the rest of their picks they have.

I don't really see why Karlsson would handicap the Penguins by refusing to waive to go anywhere. He has been pretty adamant about how he's solely focused on winning. I think he has generally liked his time in Pittsburgh (from what we've read), but they're obviously not contending anymore and him refusing to waive to go anywhere just makes it more likely he doesn't leave.

This isn't "he should waive his NMC to help the team out", but it's not really practical for him to refuse to waive to go anywhere if he actually wants to win. I'm not sure why he'd do that. I'm not going to argue he'll waive to go anywhere but I'm also not seeing much of a reason to think he would refuse to waive to only 1 specific team.
he came here for a shot at the cup, he'll go to any team that has a chance. imo

I think 3-4 NHL talents is high, but two younger talents ready for the NHL and a gamble on a third who you could still stash in the AHL is reasonable, and I fully expect one of those to be on defense. Dubas says a lot of fluff, but he was too adamant about the desire to improve the left side of the defense for him to not make a more long-term move there than something out of the Leddy/Grzelyck rehab bin.

Rust for 9OA and Quinn is great. But I truly expect there to be more. You're not going to move out every negative component or completely clear the runway to be a contender next year, but you can do more than add one long-term piece.

See this is why I'm not opposed to signing Marner. We need to get talent into the lineup any way we can get it. Beggars can't be choosers.

People want to sit here and turn their noses up all in the vain hope of having a shot at McKenna.

If we can get any kind of talent that is not ancient we should be open to it. If it's an old player the only reason to take them is Hayes-style for picks.

The Caps didn't just sit there and wait for lottery balls to bounce their way. They aggressively added pieces where they could whether young or middle (by hockey standards) aged.

I doubt Mitch has any interest in even coming here but if some reason he did I wouldn't tell him to f off.

Yes. A thousand times, yes.

And Dubas' comments about having shit in one hand and hope in the other would track with this approach.
