To be fair, that trade also included the Islanders paying pick #11 for Romanov, which I would do if that sort of opportunity became available. But yeah, Rossi and Lafreniere are above the range they could get for just the Rangers 1st.

I think guys like Rossi, Lafreniere and Byram (I think he's another guy who could be attainable) would probably cost a similar package to what Calgary paid for Dougie Hamilton back in the day, which was pick #15 and 2 2nds. So yeah, it's probably the NYR 1st plus 2 2026 2nds for any of those guys.

Which tbh, if the Rangers give up pick #12 this year, I'd probably be talking to Buffalo to see if #12 this year, a 2026 2nd and a 2027 2nd for Byram would be enough for them. Byram feels like one of those guys that could become a driver, albeit from defense rather than forwards.

Byram is the one guy whose name pops up who I'm interested in paying a big price for. I'd be scared shitless doing so, but he's the one guy where I see a clear path to being a driver.

Why would he be fired?

Jeannot was a 20 goal scorer that was on a cheap contract. They also got picks back for him.

Sometimes you lose trades. That trade had no real implications on the team and given what we know now about Cal Foote who knows what the incentive was to get him off the team.
Yeah. Losing trades is part of the game. No GM is going to bat 1.000 and even those who make good trades make some stinkers.

Like even as bad as the Granlund trade was here, I don't think that was what got Hextall fired. Mostly I think he got fired because he and Sully didn't see eye to eye and the new owners didn't vibe with him.

Me when everyone realizes Byram is just Mike Matheson with a cup.

Plus if you recover some of the assets given up by trading Karlsson, the price shouldn't be that painful to pay. Ideally you get a 1st back, but even getting like a 2nd and a decent prospect cuts the cost for Byram in half.

I think trading for Byram and selling Karlsson to recover assets is an extremely realistic move for this team to be making this off-season. It's just a question of what Buffalo can get for Byram, they may want NHL talent but most teams probably will just be offering futures for Byram.

He absolutely may be, but he's a 23 year old top-4 defenseman with great skating and puck moving skills and plays a massive position of need for the team. Gambling on him for the cost of the NYR 1st and some 2nds that they can immediately recover seems like a no brainer to me. Even if he's Mike Matheson 2.0, they can likely sell him for value down the line like Montreal is going to sell Matheson next year.

I'd take another Mike Matheson right now provided we moved EK to recoup costs.

MM was giving us solid puck moving for cheap. Defensive mind farts, sure but as a Penguin fan, I've learned to live with those.

I’m fine with bringing in any skilled winger under the assumption that Sid can fix them. Including Marner.

However with Marner I doubt Dubas even wants him given the timeline + he was gonna trade his ass in 2023.
I don't think what ails Marner is something that Sid can fix.

You wouldn't take a chance on hammering some sense into a 23 year old Mike Matheson and getting him to take that next step?

I've seen both Rakell and Rust floated as potential trade chips to throw at Buffalo too.

A player who I feel Lafreniere could still theoretically be similar to is Landeskog.

If we're comparing EV production through their first five seasons, Lafreniere and Landeskog truly aren't far apart at all. When you consider Lafreniere has averaged 15:36 TOI up until this point, and Landeskog was playing nearly 19 minutes a night - it gets more interesting to think about.

EV strength points through first five seasons:

Landeskog
: 356gp 73g 110a
Lafreniere: 380gp 85g 92a

The glaring question is why doesn't Laf get a chance on PP1? Does he just suck at it? Have the Rags literally always had five better options?

Would absolutely love to take a shot on him, kid is 23 and will be making a fine amount for a ~2nd line winger.

He's the type of young player you go after if you have hopes of possibly seeing Sid in a meaningful game as a Penguin again.

I think Rossi more of a driver than given credit for lol. Either way I don’t think you’re getting because he’s a surefire star but you want a solid 2C on an upward trajectory.

Byram being MM isnt necessarily inaccurate? but I think he’s show much more of a ceiling. Dude completely dominated that cup final

If Rust was available, I could see so many teams lining up to get him. He has absolutely no trade protection from July 1st onwards as well. Unfortunately the organization seems to really like him. Dubas keeps lumping him in with Sid/Geno/Letang every time hes mentioned.

Yeah I'm not going to act like Matheson is some amazing player, but there's value in a defenseman that can play 23 minutes a night against tough competition and put up 40 points a season. I saw some tweets from JFresh that compared him to Montour here:

Montour didn't really have everything click together until he arrived in Florida at age 26, and even though he's still flawed he's still a damn good top-4 OFD. Especially with the 2025 draft, you're basically praying that anyone picked at #12 will turn into Matheson 2.0. Smith is constantly mocked around there and his pro comparable is Matheson, but he's insanely raw and years away from having a NHL impact.

Basically if you can get Byram, you go for it and see if you can unlock a new level like Montour did. If he does hit that level, you're almost definitely getting more value than what you would have gotten with the picks used to acquire him. Even if he can't and is just Matheson 2.0, you're still probably not taking a loss there either.

I bring in Byram to run buck wild as a 1 for a couple years on a bad team. Rack up some points and confidence. Then back to being a 2/3D when we’re good.

Yeah I feel like this is exactly correct. Byram may just be Matheson 2.0, but I think his upside is clearly higher and suggests he could be more like Dunn 2.0 or Montour 2.0 if he clicks.

Re the Matheson comparison -

If Matheson had learned how to use his natural gifts, I am convinced he'd have been one hell of a player. Some of the stuff he could do was wild.

He never really harnessed them and was always a winger disguised as a dman but as raw talent comps goes, sure, that's worth taking a deeper look at because there's a big old ceiling there.
