Between him and Sladkovský there’s been some real weird hiccups with 1OA picks of late.
Was Lafenierre the consensus #1 pick? I know with Slafkovský there was talk of Shane Wright. Slafkovský should have definitely spent his post draft year in the AHL or SHL.

I'd have Stutzle, Byfield, Raymond, Sanderson, Jarvis and Faber all higher in a re-draft currently.
Im not a complete Laf hater but he’s not top 10 in a redraft (tbf it’s too early to do one imo) if you do one today

In no order:
Sanderson
Stutzle
Raymond
Byfield
Jarvis
Peterka
Rossi
Faber
Holloway
Lundell
Guhle

Are all guys I take over him right now. Nikishin could be there soon but he hasn’t played

I think Laf comes in as the best of the next tier
Laf
Cuylle
Neighbors
Perfetti
Foerster
Laferriere (LAK)
Schneider
Quinn
Grieg

Two notes— Honestly an insane draft from the Sens. Jesus. Probably 1st and 2nd pick if you do a redraft today (I think Byfield could ascend but they didn’t have chance to pick him). They got Kleven too who I like but is a little green.

Also a pretty solid draft overall. Above doesn’t even include Drysdale, Bourque, Zary, Colangelo, Evangelista, Concalves, Mercer and I’m sure more guys + goalies will start coming out the woodworks in next few years. Lot of solid players.

Difference is that they are being delusional about where they are because they are New York and think they can easily fix whatever problems they have. Which hasn't always been wrong. But unless Marner is going there in the offseason I don't see how they plan on turning around their old forward core.
That's probably fair but Pan, Miller, Zibs, and Kreider are all early 30s. If they wanted to try for another run, it's reasonable to do so. No different that us in 2019-2021-ish. We knew they were getting old but it was still reasonable to try.
It's tough because Gallant and Lavvy have done absolutely zero favors for Lafreniere's development. But, how much of that is down to coaching, and how much is down to his choppy skating, lackluster on-ice IQ, and potentially just being a disappointing 1st overall pick?

I don't really care one way or another because the 12th overall is kinda whatever--I'd prefer next season's pick for several reasons.
All three. As pointed out with the redraft replies, that draft was kinda all over. Not to mention it was one of the covid drafts and I think scouting abilities really took a hit.
With Laf you're absolutely gambling on the player he may become and definitely not the player he is now.
If you are trading for him, you are 90% trading for the player he is now - meaning that 40-50pt top line wing. 10% hoping that he gets above that 57pt mark and makes it into the 60s. If you don't have a top quality 1C, I'm not sure it's worth the price tag. If it's 2015 and Kessel was Lafreniere, I would have interest in the same way I had interest in Oshie and Kessel. With with both Sid and Geno on the cusp of retirement, nah. I mean, really, we have in Rust what we'd want out of Lafreniere, only we have him for $2mil less.

“Look at what the Caps did with Strome, why don’t we do things like that!”

Also people…

“Lafreniere sucks! Don’t waste assets trading for him!”

Could have been a really great draft for the Rangers, they picked up Cuylle and Schneider plus Brett Berard to go with Laf.

I wouldn’t say don’t trade for him, could be an interesting rehab project. But I do think we should be looking at why guys like Laf and Slavkofsky are having such massive troubles adapting/developing and learn from it.

Not a single person here has said don't trade for Lafreniere or that he straight up sucks though.

People have questions over who he is and what his ceiling is, but that doesn't equal a straight up no. Not even with Lafreniere being a lot more expensive to acquire than Strome was for the Caps.

Fair, but I guess my point is more you have to be willing to take those risks if you want any chance on the reward.

I don't really get the infatuation with the guy tbh. I mean, I get that he's big and he has draft pedigree and all that but between his mechanical issues with skating and his stagnated development due to like half a decade of terrible coaching--eh.
But....but...he had a sweepstakes named after him...?

But in all seriousness, I think Laf would be a good target (although probably unrealistic for the Rags to send him in the division), but I'm not trading a 1st for him. I think at this point, it's safe to say he's not a franchise cornerstone and even though it's highly unlikely whoever they pick at #11 (or #12) will be either, we need as many shots at one that we can get.

If Laf was a free agent and signed for $3.5M like Strome did, I think everyone would be on board.

Talking about trading a 1st for him while he's making $7M+ a year for the next 7 years changes the calculus a bit.

Laf just doesn't have ANY of that "it" factor to me. That is a nebulous claim at best but I think everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Like... the first few times I saw Michkov play for the Flyers I was like "f***... this is gonna be a long-standing problem."

The first few times I saw Laf play was not nearly as impactful to say the least.

Right it’s a risk for sure. Is it this years first or next years because I don’t think we’re getting something great this year.

That seems a little rich to me.
I agree I just don’t see another combo of assets to get him with.

it’s rich but I’m also thinking “if thats your 2C or better for a decade it’s okay to overpay”

I also think if rebuild goes poorly/longer than hoped and he doesn’t fit timeline you’ll recoup it moving him out.

5'11" 200 lbs with huge legs and a butt the size of Rhode Island.

Rossi is 5'9" 182 lbs.
Hes pretty thick so I bet he’s more like 195-200

Anyway even as listed he’s heavier or as heavy as than Point (who’s won cups as a 1C), Kadri (won a cup as a 2C), Jack Hughes, etc. strong and plays well along boards. His size is not an issue to me especially since he’s proven he can be a solid 2C at 23 years old.
