What hasn't been discussed is the rangers pick at 12. Lets assume the Rangers decide to give the pick this year. So Dubas either moves up or drafts what they have on their board. My guess is Dubas will package one of the forwards or Karlsson to add another pick to move up for a player they covet.
Plenty of discussion on that in the draft thread.

If you take Eklund, you need to start looking for a playmaking center to pair him with. IF you get 12ov and IF the ranking are a bit more askew from what the consensus rankings are, it would be nice to score Jack O'Brien or Caleb Desnoyers to go with him.

A future line of McGroarty-JOB/Des-Eklund could look good.

Otherwise, that becomes an instant organization need (however, a center is still our biggest need so...)

This summer is the most important one for the franchise since 2005. Lots of pieces going to move and the developmental players we bring in will make or break the next 5 years of the franchise.

I would argue that 2022 was. A lot of big contracts were up. But they f***ed it up by choosing the core retirement tour over progression towards Cups.
That was the chance to break free of the downward spiral and get younger. These last 3 years would have borne a lot more fruit with our farm.
We could have been well on our way to winning our next round by now.

But certainly this one is huge too.

Yeah this is a nice chance to re-focus.

I think most of us were just shocked they chose to target Jarry/Graves last time. We were cap starved for so long that they turned around and blew the load on practically sure-fire busts. Bizzare.

We've got the cap rising and finally getting away from Sully's hold on the front office.

Honestly if he can get out of one of Jarry/Graves it's a win. Both is [impossible] but a great way to send a message. Keeping them 'could' send a message that we're tanking (barring other moves) but it could also just be excused away that those two are (rightfully) impossible to move.

Pens have 2026 picks to work with. Now if they have Rangers pick as well, then the timing for adding a really good player makes all the sense with lots of cap space. The question is who is worth that offer?

The Pens 1OA would basically require Celebrini or like.

I can see making a deal around the lower of the Pens and Rangers 1sts for the right player. Don't ask me who but if you believe the lower of those comes in at around 8OA or lower, it's worth talking about.

I think Laf's development is probably too f***ed to ever hit his draft potential tbh. I don't care one way or another about the dude, but even with that being my position, f*** it. Give it a shot.

I dunno. I guess you have to ask yourself if Laf's season last year was more inline with what to expect or um... every other year is more the standard.

I've seen enough of him to be very wary of his potential as a true impact wing. But I mean... 12th overall in THIS draft likely gets you a player worse or roughly on the same level as current-ceiling, 45ish point Laf or possibly even nothing at all so... yeah. I don't think it's anything close to a homerun but I also don't really care overmuch about that NYR pick either so whatever. 12th overall in a crappy draft for a young-ish middle six wing with some POSSIBLE headroom is... OK?

Thing about Laf is he's still only 23 and he already has a 14 points in 16 games playoff run under his belt. That basically proves he has some dog and that he just needs to be in the right environment. What better environment than next to Sidney Crosby?

Any other year and I'm really hesitant to pay a 12th overall for a dude who looks like he's stagnated at a relatively unimpressive level. But this year? Eh.

I still really like the idea of having the Rangers' pick next year though. I don't think that team's gonna markedly improve, and if Shesterkin gets injured to has a down year, they're in serious trouble.
