Salary Cap: 24-25 Salary Thread Crosbicles Volume MXVI: End of season wrap up

It's all the same small crowd 4/5 patting each other's backs.

I'll look forward to everyone's frowny faces when none of them get moved, putting the how wrong you're on rebuild this year is. Everything you are crediting to a rebuild still isn't how rebuilds work up to this point.

They are telling you what they are doing, and your refusal to believe them is hilarious. Retool/Capitals view. That's Karlsson, Rakell and Rust not going anywhere. You might as well just put Crosby in your trades.

Yes, Emp, they said they were done collecting assets and the time to put some to use is getting put in effect next.

Let me know when Dubas just starts unloading everyone with term.

I'm the only one not throwing out, out of the realm hypotheticals.

Trading Rakell to gain picks to send out for Howard. Bring in Marner. I mean the takes are pretty far out there.

You keep punching away at using the NYR's pick to trade back when they are not giving it to us in 2025. It's going to be 2026. They are getting a decent player at #11. Who cares if 2026 is a deeper draft. That's the pick to trade for immediate help. You want to throw that away on Howard be my guest, I still don't think he's worth it. Not being anything critical to building a future roster like a center or top D prospect.

Wasting a 1st on him seems foolish. Trading a player out to gain a 1st to send for him is even more foolish. If Howe didn't do his ACL I'd say him and the Caps 2nd should do. Both undersized LW's.

You guys are hilarious at throwing out the fantasy hypotheticals constantly, though.

I'll preface this with - I am 100% on board the rebuild train and that every move should be geared toward that. But with EK and Rakell, trading them can still be a retool and rebuild move. Like when people say Walker + 1st for EK, that's a retool and rebuild move. You get the now player to plug the hole and you get the pick for later or to use in a trade for a young asset. If the young asset is Howard, again, that's rebuild and retool. It serves dual purposes.

I am not giving up assets when Pens need RH centers. That to me is the priority depending on the Rangers decision. Yes Pens can move karlsson and Dubas kinda hinted as much.

I love Howard's upside. Very much boom/bust, but his ceiling is high. I'd give up quite a bit for him, but I feel like he has 1 or 2 specific places he wants to go and we are neither of them.
Yeah unfortunately. We’re not a big destination city or even a contending team anymore. Sid is pretty much our only selling point.

I think it's tough to tell what Howard's intentions are here. I think he was planning on signing with the Lightning if it would burn a year off his ELC, but they couldn't do that due to the cap. If it's a guaranteed NHL role, the Penguins can give that to him pretty easily. If it's a specific location, then yeah that changes things.

He's from Wisconsin so there's not like a "local" team that he'd want to go to over another one, like how Fox forced himself to the Rangers.
Like every good American boy, he grew up wanting to play for the great Mike Sullivan.

We lost our chance.

EK for Walker and a 1st is that Walker is a 3rd pairing D-man, and Carolina is not giving up a 1st for Karlsson. It's simply not their MO. Even with retention. That's a pretty bad retool or rebuild move.

You can say it a thousand times, trading with Carolina is a crappy venture.

Expect anything except a 1st. Walker isn't even that great of a player, of course they would give up their 3rd pairing guy. So, Walker, some B/C-level-prospect (Forsmark) and a 3rd for Karlsson with some retention.

Pick a different team and I'd be more open to it.

He and McGroarty are former teammates, maybe that’s enough for Howard.
Possible, but it all still comes down to cost.

Prospect and a 2nd is as far as I'd go.

Tampa is also going to need a new 4C so maybe they can dump one of the many bottom centers in the deal.

Lizotte, Howe and a 2nd.

Another thing we can offer TB is taking a bad contract off their hands. Quite frankly they have only 1, Sheary is signed for $2 million next year, in the AHL he still counts at about $800k towards the cap. Not much but they’d probably like to be rid of him.

And then the Pens can include him with Rust in a trade with the Rangers.

Yeah that might be the most attractive kind of trade for them. They’ve fully committed to trying to win, they don’t give a rats about picks and prospects as long as they have space for deadline pick ups.

Decent idea. Wonder if they would want one of our "extras"?

If not, they may have to buy a guy or two honestly for no other reason than a full roster.

I think you can make a strong argument that the Lightning have more bad contracts than just Sheary. But if we are talking negative value, then yeah I agree.

The Lightning are going to be super active this summer, no surprise there. They currently have no cap space and no first-round draft picks in the next THREE drafts. Mr. "I prefer good players than good draft picks" BriseBois has his work cut out for him. His moves last summer were spectacular, but all it really did was rearrange furniture. Out with Stamkos; in with Guentzel; out with Sergachev; in with McDonagh. And ultimately, without Sergachev that blueline never had a chance.

Lots of players will be available from TB, including Cirelli, Cernak, Lilleberg, Moser, maybe even Point. They need depth in a bad way. I actually think we are pretty good trade partners with the Bolts this summer. They could use a backup to Vasi for sure (Ned?); they definitely could use an upgrade at 4C from Glendening (Lizotte? Novak? Acciari?). And most TB fans are saying they need more size and physicality to compete with the Panthers and now even Toronto. Sorry, we can't really help there.

I can see Dubas dealing with BriseBois this off-season, definitely. But I think Drury and Dubas will be active for sure. These two made deals even before Sullivan went there, so it is very likely they will be dealing.

Isaac Howard is nice, but I want K'Andre Miller and Alexis Lafreniere this summer.

Pretty clear Karlsson and one of the forwards will be dealt. The who and return are the missing ingredients. Lots of teams kinda close here would take Karlsson offense and puck moving in a heartbeat. Now will Karlsson be Ok with say Ottawa or Buffalo? Detroit needs a player like Rust for example to help them get over the proverbial hump. Stevy Y is under some heat here to get in or he is gone. I take the pick at 12. Grab top 12 players if Rangers give up the pick. Add in potential return for Karlsson and Pens talent flow just got incredibly big time. O'Brien at 9, Martin at 11 and RW is a great haul and now the future in coming in roses.

I know it's Dubas deciding who is on the team, but I think it's somewhat notable that Brunicke is also on Canada for the worlds. I think there's a real chance that he's on the Penguins next year, especially if Karlsson gets moved.
I'm interested to see if he earns ice time over there. Sometimes they bring a couple young guys as glorified stick boys to get them more exposure to the Hockey Canada program for future events. Brunicke is a lock for a leadership role at the WJHCs so this could just be a teach the kid how to be national team leader thing.

He played in a warm-up game today while Montour and Weegar were scratched.

I think it's safe to say that those guys will get priority when the games matter, and that other players may join the roster, too (Makar?)
