Our best way to luck into a McKenna win is not signing Marner. Marner + last year Sid could be capable of making a lottery win impossible.

How about we just stick with the plan of praying for a McKenna lottery win and then worrying about building around him?

I mean, they just had Rakell, Crosby and Rust putting up terrific years and they still finished as a bottom-10 team in the NHL.

Marner and Crosby together could both hit 100 points while the team still sucks because they have no defense and goaltending. Hence why Crosby was a -20 this year despite having a great season.

Most Hawks fans say he shouldn't have won that Smythe.

McKenna would be a nice piece to add, but much like Bedard this team will still stink with just him as our main piece.
I think he’s a little better than Bedard but agree with bolded.

Which is why I would take Marner. There’s only 2 of McDavid and Sid in the last 30 years. None of these guys can win on their own. We need to build an actual team.

Ehhh he won a Smythe. Had a run with 28 in 22.

I think Keith was the guy that really propelled them in the actual runs but Kane was the best player on the best team 3x and is prob the 4th best player of that era after 87, 71, 8.

It is very similar to Kuch.

Are we not gonna take a Kuch or Kane.
Toews and Hossa meant more to that team than Kane when they were winning I think. Kane is a very good player but I think he’s pretty damn overrated since he was a complete non entity defensively. I think McKenna projects higher.

Yeah, that's the argument I'm making too.

I'll take Marner and a top 5 pick over destroying the team and putting all our eggs in the hopes of McKenna doing what Sid did.

I don’t disagree with Toews/Keith take.

I just find it very hard to say McKenna projects higher than a guy with Kane’s accolades.

I mean he’s so gross and he’s actually got a decent frame. 6’1 and skinny. So idk why he can’t play C but I also think he can be one of those wings that can drive play from the wing.

I do not think he actually plays like Kane though. Dude is a prick and more of an elite slashing/attacking, aggressive type of player. I think he’s gonna translate to winning hockey more than Bedard. Just hard for me to be like “yeah this kid is gonna be better than the GOAT American”

I think you’re kind of proving my point. Marner is not in the same stratosphere as Rakell and Rust. He could absolutely add on 5-7 wins which would push us so far back in the lottery we might as well play the power ball.

Adding a new coach alone is probably going to give us a minor boost.

I just don’t think it’s worth it.

I agree. The Pens had once in four lifetimes luck in getting Crosby and Malkin in back to back years while drafting a number one defenseman in Crosby’s draft too. The way to build a team is to accumulate good players who exceed their contract value not hope we get the next Crosby because we are the Penguins

Zero NHL players are adding 5 to 7 wins on top of Rakell or Rust to any team. Not even McDavid would be able to have that kind of individual impact.

If McKenna goes to the NCAA next year and dominates how he is dominating the CHL, I think you probably are more inclined to believe he can be that impact.

Bedard was one of the best junior scorers I have ever seen. He hasn't hit 25 in the NHL.

Kane was a big time accumulator though, his best seasons offensively all came relatively late in his career, when Chicago was good he was putting up like 70-80 points. McKenna might not hit his career highs or totals, maybe, but I think consistently he has the potential to be a better player from the jump than Kane was. Will depend on his situation though since Kane never was without significant help.

Praying for a lottery win isn't a plan.

He’s also small and not an elite skater. McKenna is bigger and a better skater. I also think he’s a better creator/better at making others better while being legit mean

rn I am comfortable with McKenna > Bedard but it’s not set in stone. But i agree about “let’s see about next season”

I think Bedard is more of an indictment of Chicago than him, but we’ll see.

They are completely fumbling the bag with him out of incompetence. Something I am very aware we could do with McKenna even if we get him.

I think Cristall putting up similar numbers to McKenna and McKenna's no show at the WJC makes me question how much better he is than Bedard.

You don't need NHL talent to get off your shot. Bedard looked great to end the season.

I thought he was going to be a 90-100 pt player immediately. The fact he hasn't had any translatable success and the fact the CHL has generally not been producing top flight NHL talent makes me question how good McKenna actually is.

I guess what I’m saying is that it is one thing to say you think McKenna may be the better driver/player at his peak on the ice. Fair (I think Kane getting a bit underrated in this discussion but I digress)

But no matter the prospect i think asking for more than a Kane career (3 cups, Smythe, Hart, Ross) is lofty as f***

Well I’m not projecting Cups and Smythes obviously, I’m projecting individual impact.

The underwhelming players taken top 5 in the drafts since McDavid are all CHL players.

PLD and Juolevi in 2016
Nolan Patrick in 2017
Svech and Hayton in 2018
Dach and Byram in 2019
Laf and Byfield in 2020

The CHL is developing NHL players and maybe Byfield or Laf hit, but legitimate elite talent hasn't really been predictable out of that league for nearly a decade.

It still sickens me Philly got Michkov that year. Hes going to end up the best player in that draft. We should have just embraced the suck earlier.
