I think it’s just him politely saying that they didn’t wanna ruin Pickering by leaving him in the NHL on a bad team.

I also think there’s an attempt at character-building going on. They want to toughen up these younger guys, or see how they respond to public critique.

I don't think character building is something you have to worry about with Pickering.

Much like McG he just exudes NHL demeanor in his interviews.

Under the circumstances, I can see them not trading Karlsson and finally putting him in a position where he can successfully play to his strengths.
I think the coaching change will make them use this year as a "test run" to hide the fact there is too much garbage on the roster to make many meaningful changes. After this year Geno, Hayes, Heinen, Acciari, Lizotte, and every Dman thats not EK, Letang, and Graves are all UFA. Add a couple high end pieces the next 2 drafts, and have a youthful bottom 6 in 26-27.

Honestly I bet Karlsson gets traded and they just promote Timmins and Brunicke to fill the RD spot. Maybe Karlsson retained for a LD and futures and then just have Timmins as the 2nd pair RD and Brunicke as the 3rd pair RD.

If they're tanking, I don't see why they can't run with something like:

Trade-Letang
Pickering-Timmins
Graves-Brunicke

You obviously don't want to risk ruining these prospects by rushing them, but that's what you have guys like Shea, Kolyachonok and such for. If Pickering struggles, send him to the AHL and put Shea on the 2nd pair. You're tanking, who gives a shit if you suck?

By the logic of our rebuild and Sully leaving, I hope part of the plan here is to get our kids as much Quality Sid Time as possible. Please Kyle, let's give these children a chance to learn from Sid how to be a Real Pro.

Honestly I think it would be more likely the opposite. I think they're going to make very few changes because they're going to tank next year.
I don't mind if they tank, I just would like to see us get some assets back for the pieces of value we still have before we completely crater what little of the value remains.

So Hagel gets suspended for an interference hit. Panthers do it, nothing.

It's not the same hit.

One player had just released the puck and the other never had it nor was expected to receive the puck.
In Hage's situation he also hit Barkov in the head. Jake did not get a headshot
Apples and watermelons.

As far as issues with the Pens, Rust being listed as part of the core is pretty far down IMO.
They can call him whatever they want. My concern is their willingness to trade him. With zero clauses, he should get a good return. At his age/injury history and where this team is, Rust is 100% someone that should be traded to benefit the future.

I’m less worried about individual players like Rust and more about direction. Which it sounds like we’re finding one and Sullivan was an impediment to that.

Do EK at 50% to Carolina for Walker and a 2026 1st and send out Hayes for whatever late round pick you can get. Run with:

Koivunen-Crosby-Rust
McGroarty-Malkin-Rakell
Heinen-Novak-Tomasino
Ponomarev-Lizotte-Acciari
Hallander-Poulin

Walker-Letang
Pickering-Timmins
Graves-Brunicke
Shea

Jarry-Nedjelkovic

I bet they give some of the other struggling guys like Graves and Heinen a chance with the new coach to see if they can improve their value under a new coach and system. Graves, Jarry and Heinen all stick out as candidates for that. I still think Hayes and EK get traded but I'm expecting a quiet off-season beyond that.

I feel like Dubas’ quote of “we need more competitive players” was a direct shot at Karlsson. Curious who he’ll waive for and what the return will be.

Wouldnt be shocked if Karlsson is given a chance under a new coach.
