A reporter asked Dubas about Karlsson's quotes about wanting to win a cup and how that's his #1 priority. Dubas responded with "his preparation needs to match his ambition", pretty clearly suggesting that Karlsson isn't putting in the work needed to actually help his team win.

Dubas also made the comment Gurgs mentioned above about how happy these guys are in Pittsburgh but they aren't winning, which makes him wonder if there is a complacency issue. That's why I think his comments were about EK more than anyone else.

Complacency is as in Dubas's take and moves to the roster. Asking a guy like Karlsson to be better, do better, while he has to play with a plethora of low-level partners is kind of an ironic aspect he's playing on.

Kalsson "Like, who are you to tell me how to play with the absolute garbage you have given me to work with."

I agree with @CheckingLineCenter where there's not much really to take away from this press conference than where they are/were before.

I think Karlsson is going to block any trade where Dubas has no outcome but to call him out like he is, but really, just give him better quality to play with then, Kyle. I think Karlsson has held up his end of the bargain, whereas, you clearly have not. You can't have a teardown and expect the rest to keep/hold serve.

This is just a bunch of GM smoke screen without any answers to any of it.

That Ottawa deal seems about right for what Karlsson will bring back tbh
Yeah, I think you replace Karlsson's cap hit with a Byram/Miller type - ideally not for 7 years - and you get two positive assets in a big center with upside and a 2nd round pick.

What? He spent 99% of his time with Pettersson before Pettersson was traded, and was having issues even before MP got moved.

Karlsson makes $11.5 million a year, he's one of the highest paid defenseman in hockey.

Why does it not make sense for Ottawa?

They have nothing on defense in the system. Their only points producers on defense are Sanderson and Chabot, and it's a steep drop off after that. They're going to want to make a splash now that they're back in contention, so why not bring back a fan favorite? And they have the cap space to make a move.

Their top prospect is an offensive RHD?

Also a firm no to trading a 2nd for Robertson.

This x1000. Dubas may think that he's got the magic touch regarding Toronto's garbage players (that he's oh so familiar with) since the pair we got from them at the deadline were not completely useless in Pittsburgh.

But we gave up almost literally nothing for that duo, which is about what they're worth.

Anyone offering a 2nd for Robertson should be measured for a straitjacket.

Who has struggled this year and is likely 2+ years away from contributing. And there is no one else of note in their system, which is worse than the Penguins.

If we are having to pay a 3rd and a 5th to get a 2nd from Ottawa for EK65, I'll just keep him.

I'm not going to defend Yakemchuk because I hated the pick, but saying he's struggling this year is honestly bizarre.

I actually like Robertson. I said before the draft he was my pick for us in 2019. But it depends which 2nd we’d give. He’s not worth our own 2026 2nd which is gonna be in the 30s.

OK, so the deal can be better. That doesn't change the fit.

And Yakemchuk's regular season production dropped by 22 points when he should have continued to progress. Regardless, he's a couple of years away, which means Karlsson isn't blocking him.

Yakemchuk was also like nearly a Senator this year. You're out to lunch @DesertedPenguin on this one.
As I said, his production has dropped and he wasn't picked for the world junior team. Didn't even get a call to camp. It doesn't mean he's a bust. It means his progression has stalled a bit and he's likely a couple of years away.

And even if Yakemchuck takes off, who is in the way on the Senators roster? Do you think Jensen and Matinpalo are going to block anyone?

They could easily run:
Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Karlsson
Kleven - Yakemchuk

Problem solved.

Calgary Hitmen are a more competitive team this year.

Yakemchuk is likely focusing on defense this year given that was the knock on him in his draft year.

Mynio was traded to the Hitmen in January which has also eaten into his production.

Also had a week to week injury in January.

Misa, Sennecke, Parekh and others were also not part of the WJC team.

That's the issue when you stuff it full of loser Knights like Bonk and Cowan.

Yup. Pionk just signed for 7 mill and he was approaching buyout candidate before he was rejuvenated by Samberg. Karlsson at 6-7 mill is pretty valuable.
I think Slavin-Karlsson could make beautiful music together.

Ehh. I mean, while it's true that the LDs other than Pettersson that we used this season weren't very good, it's not a reasonable conclusion that all of Karlsson's mistakes were the result of having a poor partner.

Which is fine, honestly. Sign some filler guy like Nate Schmidt, put Shea and Pickering behind him.

OR.... Brian Dumoulin is an RFA........
To summarize. Dubas says LD is a mess. Dubas says he will focus on trading for RFAs other teams can't afford rather than UFAs.
Incoming K'AM. Let's just hope he keeps their 1st.
