I've never really been an Ekblad fan tbh.

Florida's probably gonna pick up some random dude and turn him into a top 4 blueliner gem anyway.
It's probably the right call for them especially given his injury history, but dude ate a lot of minutes for them. Tougher minutes, too. I think people are being a little too cavalier about losing him.

I mean it all comes down to personal preference, but where would the normal human being rather live? Miami or Edmonton/Winnipeg?

Pretty easy to see why a host of these guys don’t want anything to do with Canada beyond the tax situations.

Miami f***ing sucks

Jupiter (honestly even Hobe Sound) thru Ft Lauderdale is legitimately incredible if you can afford the setup in a stress free way (house, insurance, boat slip off house, golf club). If you play golf and enjoy the water it is legit the best place ever. Cannot recommend enough.

That said you can’t really be there from May/June thru Aug. Heat and daily t storms. So when it’s nice they are playing the season.

I’m sure there’s a mental advantage to going to the rink in Florida in the droll of the season in January vs doing the same in Edmonton but it’s not like they’re on vacation. Traveling a ton and very busy.

But there’s advantages everywhere. Pittsburgh probably beats that part of Florida on spend/COL despite tax advantages. Your money goes way further.

The tax stuff is nice, but I think the reason guys seem to go to Florida teams is because they're pretty f***ing good, and must have a great team atmosphere.
Not a peep about these markets for 25 years (honestly a lot of jokes about hockey in warm weather at their expense) and the moment they become good it’s unfair for the rest of the league.

Being in a nice area (near the beach, weather much better in a year round basis) has to have some severe props to your seasonal depression.

I can hardly take it around here leaving downtown in December and it’s either almost dark and then is dark by the time you get home.

In Edmonton, the sun sets at 4:20 at its worst. I would be so much more miserable if I stepped out of work and it was already night time.

Several other teams with similar tax situations.

Panthers also went out and got guys through trades too - and a few signings....and none of that was 'because of' the tax situation.

It's being used completely incorrectly in this sense. Some of the Tampa stuff? Maybe. But like - who are we talking about here? Bob was [considered] massively overpaid when he went there. Tkachuk got traded. Barkov signed a completely legitimate deal. I don't get it with this team. Going down the roster like - which specific free agent fish did the Panthers hook on a tax-specific deal? None.

Toronto never complained when Tavares said he only wanted to play there.

Every city has its advantages. NY has high tax rates but some players just want to be there because it’s NY.

For Gods sake look at the success the Jets are having and they’re in Winnipeg which to my understanding is basically a colder version of a Mad Max movie.

Toews to the Jets. Come on Dubas stop sleeping :sarcasm:
Dont be surprised if the Pens dont do anything until the draft.

I believe at this time, they are looking at adding another Assistant Coach which I have heard may be Todd Nelson who won back to back calder memorial cups in the AHL (perfect for development) but these are only "reports"

I also see Dubas taking his time with his RFA's this year. Primarily Tomasino and Timmins who I expect to be back on 2 year deals. Maybe Dewar on a 1 year deal but no talks have been held at this time "per reports"

They have to wait for the Rangers to decide what they are doing with their pick and I seen "reports" that Drury may take it down the very last hour to decide.

The benefit of acquiring Mavrik Bourque is that he's a center. While he is not yet a 2C in the NHL, he's only 23, so it's not impossible that he could become one. If you look at the Trade Board, everybody is looking for 2C. There is a dearth of top 6 centers, and even bottom 6 centers, so I think it makes sense to try to hoard centers.
He would be a great transition piece. You have him and Novak holding down the middle 6 center slots (with Malkin on wing or when he retires). When Novak gets old, you put Mav at 2C. That's fine until the guys we draft in these next 2-3 drafts start coming into their own.

I don't see how Dubas can ignore a middle 6 center acquisition this upcoming season - whether it's trade or FA at the draft, FA, or in-season. The need is way to glaring regardless of where they want to finish. Unless they want Lizotte to just ride it out. Or it Hallander wants to play center.
Getting ahead of Bennett for when people overlook the 8 years and talk about state tax

8x8 = 64 mil

7 year UFA deal needs to be 9.15M AAV to beat that. But then add premium for leaving team he knows he fits well on, and leaving great place to live during season. Even at $10M AAV he’s only making an extra $6M gross (in one less year but kinda moot at his age at end of contract). That doesn’t change his life or lifestyle or budget really at all.

Makes very little sense for him to leave unless someone comes in with a 11+ offer which is ridiculous. and even then idk how much that really matters. Like what is the difference between 64M and 77M once you net out cost of living and taxes? You know you play well, are happy, and can win there. No guarantee of those things if you leave.

If I’m his agent I’m all over him to stay.
For Bennett, I don't think it will be purely about money. I imagine he'd take $7mil in Florida before he took $9mil in Calgary/Buffalo/Pittsburgh/etc.

Hometown guy. Makes sense. Good for him if it's anything more than a PTO or anything more than league minimum.

Minnesota apparently rejected a deal for 15 overall and an unnamed unnamed player for Rossi. Unless they love a guy like Rust, not sure how we can get him. Anyone hear a price from a reliable source?
Hard to assess without knowing what player Vancouver was offering up. I could guess it was Chytil and I think Guerin should reject that offer too. VAN does seem dead set on trading that #15 pick.

f***in' Guerin, man.

Also it's a shame the Pens don't have a center to throw at Vancouver. They seem hell bent on trying to set up a safety net for when they inevitably lose Pettersson and Hughes in the next year.

I would imagine the unknown player was either Conor Garland or Nils Hoglander. Both of whom are 5'8" and 5'9" around 185 lbs. Guerin hates tiny players HAHA

Pettersson is locked in for years. Don't see them losing him.

Hughes they should trade this summer. If they could pull off Nemec and something else big in Jersey's prospect pool plus multiple 1sts they could easily have the best D core in the league in a few years.

So they rejected 15+player but Philly apparently rejected a late 1st or Foerster?

Such an odd player to value. I doubt many GMs are keen on adding a top 6 center that's 5'9 and paying legit assets for him. As 3C, great, but then Minny ain't gonna wanna accept a 3C price tag.

I have no idea what they even want either. They ain't getting a young, equivalent player. I don't think picks help them much. Seems like what they need is a quality 3C...which Rossi is. Seems like they'd be better off just keeping him.

Well I think the relationship between Pettersson and the organization itself is shattered. They dragged both of the guys through the mud publicly and JR said there's no guarantee he won't move Pettersson. Probably a situation where it's best to part ways for a fresh start kinda thing tbh.

And it's not like Rutherford needs much of a reason to make a trade....
