They’d probably sign someone like Saad or trade for another young guy if they did that, I wouldn’t be all that worried.

Swapping and #12 for Byram and #24 would probably make me happy, especially if you could draft someone like Kindel at #24. I like the idea of trading down with picks to make trades more than losing picks to make trades, and moving down from #12 to #24 is well worth swapping Rakell for Byram.

Not only that, but signing Saad lets you keep Koivunen on RW and run with:

McGroarty-Crosby-Rust
Saad-Malkin-Koivunen
Why stop there? Move assets for Howard, Bourque or Rossi, and let that player play top 6. Hallander is in the mix too.

Has everyone else heard the rumors of Elias Petterrsson and Vancouver wanting to move on? This may have already been talked about but if you somehow trade for him and mark him as your 2C behind Crosby I think that not only helps himself and potentially coming the 1C once Crosby retires but also shows Crosby they are still trying to the finals one last time before he retires. I have no idea what Vancouver would want in return though. It’s a huge cap hit taken off their books though and with Quinn Hughes basically on his way out too, they may look for futures which we have pick wise.
I don't think we've got the ammo. 11OA, McGroarty and Brunicke and I still don't know it's enough.

The benefit of acquiring Mavrik Bourque is that he's a center. While he is not yet a 2C in the NHL, he's only 23, so it's not impossible that he could become one. If you look at the Trade Board, everybody is looking for 2C. There is a dearth of top 6 centers, and even bottom 6 centers, so I think it makes sense to try to hoard centers.
Yeah I see him with a 2C ceiling, 3RW floor. We can use both, especially being a righty, so get him in the system and see what happens.

Yeah, I don't know where this narrative of needing guys like Saad or going after Marchment came from.

Pick up young guys, give them a shot. If they don't work out after a couple years, move on.

I like Peterka but Buffalo's needs don't align with what the Pens have.

They're probably looking for top 4 RD that can play defense, an upgrade at 2C, and if Peterka's asking out, a scoring line LW.

I don't think they'll be much interested in 1st rounders, and this team shouldn't be trading any of their own 1sts anyway tbh.
Graves technically plays defense.
Tommy Novak is a C.
Rust plays on a scoring line.

I don't see the problem. We have exactly what they need. :sarcasm:

Ricky Bourque scouting reports from EP:

February 8th, 2025 - San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars

By David St-Louis2025-02-18
In many ways, Mavrik Bourque looks like Marco Rossi and he could follow a similar curve if a team gives him a top-six opportunity. He's an incredible complement. Right spot, right time, intercepts pucks and then launches the offence. Good support in all three zones and has a lot of passing skills: give-and-goes, slip passing, and backhands to teammates in space...He attracted defenders before moving the puck and spotted some advanced plays. His skating is still more of a weakness, but his strides are longer and he powers through. Speed is fine for this level and he has the physical skills. He seals pucks, makes cycle plays...Exactly the player we saw in junior. A support player right now, but one who will be as good as his teammates.

Bourque tries a lot of plays. Many of them failed in this game, but the ones that connected made you understand why he has that kind of permission. He can leverage good scoring chances into better ones and he has a good anticipation of where his best options may be. Skating is still an issue, especially at his size, but the crossovers propel him enough and he gets in position on the backcheck and puts in the effort defensively. He's also inside-driven. He reminds me of Nick Suzuki in many elements, a bit smaller, but same type of game.

April 23rd, 2024 - Texas Stars vs. Manitoba Moose

Another really impressive Bourque game. The acceleration mechanics are better. He worked on them. More of sprint motion. He has to go all out (expand more energy) to get ahead of the play, but it's a viable NHL skating stride now. The physical skills are impressive, too. He protects the puck, takes away stick, prevents battles from being lost cleanly, gets inside positioning...Strong impact on the forecheck, mostly through reads and positioning. He makes advanced give-and-go plays, always preparing his passes with deception, and he moves well without the puck, too. If he gets a top-six chance in the NHL some day, a team might discover the full extent of his talent. Hopefully, Dallas realizes the need to give him a chance. It may not work out, due to size/skating combo and he's inefficient and a bit risky as a player right now, but the hockey sense shines in a major way.

EP draft year summary:

His hockey IQ is unreal. Out of nothing, he’s going to make plays that on one else can see on the ice. Bourque is very effective at putting the puck at the proper space so he can protect the puck. He’s so good at bringing defenders to him. With the occasional head fake or a change of speed; he's shown a real knack for luring defencemen out of passing lanes.

Sports Forecaster:

Scouting Report
Speedy, he plays with tremendous energy and passion. Can light up the scoreboard at lower levels, both as a finisher (mostly due to his deadly wrist shot) and with his vision and passing skills. Lacks ideal size for the National Hockey League and will need to add significant bulk and get physically stronger for the highest level. His intensity level can at times play against him, so he could stand to play a slightly more controlled game (without losing his feisty attitude and zest for making plays).

Long Range Potential: Fast, aggressive and talented center with upside.

Posted before that the cap rising just will limit free agency and opportunities. Trades and draft/development take on more importance as well. I t changes the dynamic for player under favorable contracts with assets of production and positional need. Pens are in great shape here with Rust, Rakell and IMHO Karlsson. RD RH and exceptional puck mover is simply hard to find. I think those believing the Pens have to add picks to move him are crazy.

Getting ahead of Bennett for when people overlook the 8 years and talk about state tax

8x8 = 64 mil

7 year UFA deal needs to be 9.15M AAV to beat that. But then add premium for leaving team he knows he fits well on, and leaving great place to live during season. Even at $10M AAV he’s only making an extra $6M gross (in one less year but kinda moot at his age at end of contract). That doesn’t change his life or lifestyle or budget really at all.

Makes very little sense for him to leave unless someone comes in with a 11+ offer which is ridiculous. and even then idk how much that really matters. Like what is the difference between 64M and 77M once you net out cost of living and taxes? You know you play well, are happy, and can win there. No guarantee of those things if you leave.

If I’m his agent I’m all over him to stay.

At the 8x8 he's also giving them a discount. It would have to be in the 12.0 or better for him to bite.

Yeah. Bennett could get a bit more elsewhere but between taxes, team, and living situation, it's kind of a no-brainer to want to stick around with the Panthers.

Apparently Marchand is really contemplating sticking around too.

Everyone's different, some of these guys love the big city life of Manhattan and some of them probably love the relative anonymity and weather (eww) of Florida. And some of these guys value staying close to family even if it means Toronto pressure or Alberta weather.

These guys aren't real.. deep.. and they're going to mostly follow the same trends as normal people which skews towards low taxes and nice weather.

Barring a severe underpayment (or other ridiculous issue), why would ANYONE leave the Panthers right now?
Yeah, they're not going to be able to keep everyone, but it's going to be the team deciding that, not the players.

Previous reports sounds like Ekblad might be the sacrificial lamb. Not sure if that will be enough to cover everything, but it's a decent sized chunk.
