The point is to be as bad as possible because there is nothing else to be at this point so you might as well benefit as much as you can from the pain.

I wouldn’t even go this far, it’s about asset management for me. If you can get Bourque for a 3rd or get Bourque for swapping Timmins for Dumba, you do the latter every time. Same way with Leddy in St. Louis, even getting a 4th to take him on is better than trying to sign a comparable UFA to what would likely require a multi-year deal.

I’ve been clear that I don’t want this team to be tanking, but this team needs to make any sort of moves that have this team getting good young players or picks for discounted rates. That’s exactly what they did last offseason with the Hayes and Glass moves and they should be doing the same this offseason, although I don’t think it will be as lucrative.

If you can gain some assets all the better.

But I mean... I would like to avoid another slog of a season where there is no hope of making the playoffs and yet you're still picking at the draft outside the ranges of anything of consequence. It's the worst kind of limbo for a team to be in. So like... you know... be as bad as possible, play a ton of young players and see what you have and don't have in that group and hopefully draft day next season can be a little more exciting than "hey MAYBE if it all pans out right this guy can be our future 3C!"

I don't think they hired Dan Muse to suddenly bring in shitty mid-30s defensemen. He is hear to teach. Let him teach.

There will be injuries so that shittily-great d-corps that Emp posted is only if everyone is healthy. Besides, what d-man in this org would or should be getting NHL minutes? Pickering and Koala? They can do spot duty as needed. And they can learn in NHL practice.

Tbh I also don’t think Kolyachonok looked all that good and I think the Penguins try to get him through waivers to help WBS next year.

I’m obviously not going to be mad if they add a good young LD this year, but I think it’s really Byram or no one for me. Or at least no one on my radar that seems like could be available.

I mean, maybe. But if you already know this, why in the world would you hire Adam Foote as head coach then???

Possibly. But I mean, could a more structured, positional defense actually lead to LESS offense from EK65 than what we have seen in the first two years? I mean, is that even possible???
We're in a rebuild, there's no point in holding onto him IF he can be moved for a solid asset or two.

If there is one lesson I'd take from the Panthers it's to take swings at guys with potential when their value is down. Like getting Reinhart for a lottery protected first and a meh goalie prospect when he was just a so-so top 6 guy not looking worthy of the second overall pick. Or getting Bennett for a second and the guy they drafted in the second round the previous year when he looked like he might never be a true top 6 guy.

A year ago, Mavrik Bourque was the same age Koivunen and Broz were now. He scored 26 goals and 77 points in the AHL. That's better than Koivunen and way better than Broz. He followed that up with a decent year as a depth forward on a deep team.

If he got Bourque for a third, where would he rank for the Pens in top players under 25? But as a former 1st just a year removed from a better year at the same age as Koivunen, I'd say they'd be in similar spots, so he'd probably be around top 5 for us. Why wouldn't we want another young forward at that level of potential for a 3rd?

The point of adding shitty mid-30s defensemen is to get paid to take them on, something like Timmins for Dumba and Bourque. Whether you have Timmins or Dumba on the 3rd pair means nothing in the long run, but Bourque could actually become something useful.
You conveniently left Bourque out of conversation previously. Obviously Bourque changes the story.

We might not be able to, that is the point.

If LA wants EK65 and is willing to give us Greentree and Spence (no retention), sure. Let's do it.
Having Doughty and Clarke really eliminates the need for them to go for EK. Rakell would be far more likely based on their immediate needs.

Has everyone else heard the rumors of Elias Petterrsson and Vancouver wanting to move on? This may have already been talked about but if you somehow trade for him and mark him as your 2C behind Crosby I think that not only helps himself and potentially coming the 1C once Crosby retires but also shows Crosby they are still trying to the finals one last time before he retires. I have no idea what Vancouver would want in return though. It’s a huge cap hit taken off their books though and with Quinn Hughes basically on his way out too, they may look for futures which we have pick wise.

Penguins current trading strategy according to the last 18 pages:

Haves: underperforming loser players

Wants: underperforming loser players

....I guess it'll be someone with a new name to be underwhelmed by getting 42 points

I saw a Stars fan say they’d do Marchment and Dumba for Helleson, so I think Marchment and Dumba for Timmins could be achievable. I also saw a suggestion of something around Marchment for Howard, which I would definitely do. Tampa is super right on the cap, but Marchment at 50% for Howard’s rights would be a really nice move.

Ugh ... so begins the season of asset management disappointment.

Yeah the reason that one kinda stinks is I bet the Penguins could have done that, retained 50% and immediately flipped him for better. Even if it wouldn’t be a crazy improvement, I think they could have acquired a 2nd at minimum for Marchment at $2.25 million.
