I mean, I've said it doesn't really matter either way. I agree that a 3rd is pretty much a valueless asset and the odds of finding someone better than Bourque are very small. But like, you can have any number of Bourques for free via waiver wire, or be paid to take a similar nothingmancer off of a team's hands. And you get your extra slot machine pull.

I'm just bored, man. Daring to have a little ambition, even if it ends up being a dud. The difference between min-maxing a 3rd round pick and a 25pt (at the moment) Bourque is so minimal that there are valid arguments either way. I just prefer the cooler "f*** it, let's see what happens with the pick" avenue to securing that elusive warm body that a team doesn't bother matching a $2M AAV offer sheet on.

Yeah but that's where we are.

Those 2M dollar also-rans are our future top six forwards my dude.

I think the idea with Bourque / Laf / whoever in the 21-23 year old range is that you pump up their value with Sid and potentially get a Hagel type return from a desperate team with retention etc.

Bourque was a dominate player in the AHL who was largely played down the line-up. Holloway comes to mind. Different skill sets.

What do you think St Louis gets for Holloway this season if they trade him?

I think a bucket of old cottage cheese with a tie is a better assistant coach than Todddddddddddddddddd
Remember when the team had to twist Sullivan's arm in order to fire Reirden after a historically bad PP with Sid, Geno, Letang, and Karlsson on it?

What the f*** do I have to do in order to get my foot in the door for this gig, man? Be absolutely f***ing clueless and wretched at your job with disastrous results, but still rake in hundreds of thousands, or millions, until you decide you're done working in the field.

We have those also-rans. We have a Novak. We have a Broz. We'll probably have another center or two in the system from this draft, and potentially some pretty good ones with Hagens, Martin and O'Brien maybe being around with the 11th overall.

I'd just rather have the extra pick to throw a hail mary with. If you miss, it costs you a worthless pick and a shot at an absolute nobody like Bourque? I'll take the like 1% shot that it turns out to be another Jake, Rust, or Letang, and find my warm body lineup filler some other way. /shrug

But if he does end up getting snagged with an offer sheet for a 3rd, I'm not really gonna think about it twice. I'm just sayin'. Preferences and all that.

For all you Erik Karlsson trade fans, Seravalli says a few teams have inquired so far, while a few others are thinking about him internally (whatever the hell that means). Apparently, teams absolutely need retention. And of course, nobody has asked Karlsson for his thoughts.

I still believe the best course of action is to sit tight here and hope for an offensive rebound under a new coach and system.

Anyway, need that extra 3rd to throw the 11th overall, Washington's 2nd, and a 3rd at Seattle for the 8th and Toronto's 2nd next year in order to snag Hagens or Martone. :naughty: Can't be wasting it on a Bourque, guys.

As long as we get fair value I am game.

Trading them for sake of trading I won't be happy with.

We already have too many people complaining about a fair Guentzel return I don't need to hear complaints about trading Rust or Rakell for not enough.
Where and why is this narrative coming from? (Trading them just to trade them)?

Who's suggesting we just give them away? Dubas isn't just gonna give them away.

That said, we have to be somewhat realistic as to what we expect. And it would be considerable, but not necessarily earth shattering.

But again, there's NOT ONE person dead or alive suggesting we just them away. Just to be clear.

I think the idea should be to fill out most of the roster with players that are likely marginal but also still pretty young. That way you can play an almost-certainly-terrible lineup and you MIGHT even accidentally revive a career or two at which point you can choose to keep or flip. To me Bourque already looks like a hail mary just with a couple of steps removed and able to fill in ASAP for a Rust or Raks to help make this team shittier.

I give very few shits about Bourque. Again... if nothing else his name is f***ing "Mavrik" and that's extremely unfortunate.

But I think I give even less shits about third round picks. At least in quantity. You are largely drafting complete prayers by that point.
Most people never care about lower picks until they push them over the line.
You seemed fine with having Letang in 2016, or Murray in 2016 and 2017, filling vital roles brilliantly. Or Rust's 2 goals vs Tampa when we were facing elimination twice, or years of outperforming his contract. That was okay too.

Yeah, they're prayers. That's why you load up and improve your math.
I would be really hesitant to trust scouts so much. Time and time again they're wrong.
Kucherov 58th. Makar 4th. Guentzel 77th.
Letang 62nd.

Nah f*** that. Just load up and see what happens. They don't have a good alternative way to a Cup, so may as well try.

Yeah, I mean, I get the thought process. I'm just saying that's pretty boring.

After the past 7 years of Sullivan hockey, I'm ready to take bold ~risks~ like passing on a nobody a la Bourque to dream big with my nothingmancer asset 3rd rounder. I'm just talkin' a little bit of shit. I hate the off-season.

Boring how?

I hate to tell you but this is ALL gonna be boring. This is a one player team at this point and he's old as shit, too.

EDIT: I DO see what you mean but I don't care at all about the NHL draft. If we're talking boring it has to be right up there with the All Star Game.

All the selling we still have left to do is going to make back a lot of those picks we might lose on offer-sheets (or for getting a guy like Howard), too.

I think if you have *too many* picks you might run into a point where you just have too many prospects all turning pro and getting ELCs at around the same time and not enough contract spots to give out to all of them and guys might start slipping through the cracks. It's a good problem to have but still could be an issue at some point.
Getting a player like Howard in the fold is seemingly a move KD would be very intrigued by. I sure hope we're front and center here provided TB's ask is reasonable.

I just think it's pretty uninspired and boring to break open the excel spreadsheet and weigh the difference in atoms separating the values of a 3rd round pick and a waiver fodder, 25pt player. Sure, Bourque gives you a body to throw in at the NHL level. But you can grab one of those for free via waiver wire or sign one for free a la Beau or be paid to take a terrible contract off of someone's hands a la Glass or Hayes. Take a risk--if you can even call it that --and keep the pick to use in the hopes your scouts find a gem, or as an add in part of a package for something more significant.

I expect Karlsson would consider waiving for Carolina, Toronto, Dallas, Florida, Vegas, and Tampa as all are perennial playoff teams that could use a 2RD upgrade. I don't think he has interest in staying for a rebuild. At his age, he needs to chase any opportunity of contending if he wants a SC.

Anyway onto other shit

I dunno how the Panthers hope to keep Bennett and Marchand but it looks like they're really gonna give it a go. Tax break, living in South Beach, and looking at a potential threepeat is gonna be hard to beat, even if you're throwing a $10M AAV at Marchand.

Seems like ol' Jimbo might be doin' some wheelin' and dealin' here. Especially if he thinks Quinn Hughes is gonna jet to Jersey the second he can in order to play with Jack and Luke. And just based on the vibe and discussions, I imagine the Canucks think that's the likely outcome.

Muse seems more concerned about playing solid positional defense, that doesn't fit EK's game at all (MR. Freelance). If the value is there you absolutely move him. He won't be here by the time we're good again anyhow.

I wonder if the Isles actually trade back. Word is the Hawks are trying desperately to move up, or move back. Dunno if Chicago has anything the Isles would want, but dropping back a few picks to land Hagens is fun from a neutral fan standpoint. Definitely questionable management of a hockey team to pass on Schaefer but y'know, f*** Long Island and their dogshit hockey team.

Lotta smoke around Rust in particular… think he’s gone July 1st at the latest.
I think the only way he's gone before his NTC drops is if some team desperately wants to trade for him before it's open season. Obviously, the hurdle is he'd either have to waive, or not have them on his list. But if you're basically like "listen, we're gonna be looking to move you once your NTC drops anyway" maybe he just says f*** it and okays the deal.
