With every Duchene, Bennett, etc. who re-signs before July 1, Rust and Rakell’s value grows. They could very well end up the best assets available outside of Marner and Ehlers, at a time when everyone and their mother is in an arms race.
For sure. Dubas has an extremely easy job this summer. Just depends on what he values as returns, and whether or not he takes the safe bet returns or tries to hold out and squeeze more value out of the deal(s). Hoping he doesn't get too cute and f*** things up.

If the charges on Carter Hart are dropped, you just know he's going to be an Oiler. They love their questionable character guys
I actually hadn't considered that possibility. Coming in at a cheap 1yr deal and outplaying Skinner could be just what they need. Course, goaltending was on one part of their problem.

I still really, genuinely believe you don't even take the change that Rust and Rakell get injured (like they're prone to) or regress. Just trade 'em this summer. At the draft, after FA, whenever. Neither should be on the team in October though. /shrug
Fully agreed. There’s a perfect storm in our favour right now, and their value will (absolutely, categorically) never be higher. I hope Dubas is looking for a mix of young guys with some offensive pop who can play next season and 1st rounders in what is looking like a remarkably deep draft next year. That said, no rush. He should be taking calls but not moving them until at least a few days after the FA dust has settled and the market for them is hottest.

As long as we get fair value I am game.

Trading them for sake of trading I won't be happy with.

We already have too many people complaining about a fair Guentzel return I don't need to hear complaints about trading Rust or Rakell for not enough.

Eh. I think it's safe to say that most people understand the rather large difference in the quality of the players in question and expectations in regards to potential returns.

We have people who think these guys need to be kept until someone offers like multiple 1sts. There's gonna be bitching regardless because people can't come to terms with the era being over, and the fact that the big value assets are, in reality, just decent middle 6 wingers and not guys teams are gonna fall over themselves to acquire.

Gimme a 1st rounder and a Koivunen caliber prospect for each of 'em and I'm taking the deal and running away laughing tbh.

They were updating the article as teams were eliminated. The date of when each team was written is before the team's name. In the Pens case, April 14.

I mean, I agree, not updating these blurbs when something major happens like firing the coach is pretty pathetic. But it's not as pathetic as not realizing they fired the coach already.
It wouldn’t surprise me if this authors of their piece didn’t realize we actually had fired him lol

The perfect storm would be - being in this exact situation but at the 2026 draft and us being picking top 6. Adding a 12ov from the NYR and then looking at 1-2 additional 1sts in a much stronger draft would be great. I am weary of sending out so many assets for 2025 1sts with it being such a meh draft.

I'd love for Dubas to get another Beauvillier type player - someone we take in trade or sign in FA that we can send out at the 26 TDL.

Which is why we sign Marner and Ehlers, so people have to take Rust and Rakell :)

So were offering the max for Mavrik Bourque for a 3rd compensation @ $2,340,037 and Nicolas Hague for a 2nd compensation between $2,340,037 and $4,680,076 ?

I'd like to think that but honestly and I know it's contested here. I don't mind the Guentzel return as a UFA with no promise of signing a deal. Kind of reminds me of how we got Iginla cheap back in 2013. Thing is we actually got real assets back.

I would definitely accept a late 1st and. Koivunen level prospect for both.

I would then see if we can bring in Dumba or Marchment or UFAs for free.

I want to trade Rakell and Rust for 2026 first and hopefully get the rangers 2026 first. That would give the pens 4 - 2026 1rst in a deep draft.

then in my arm chair GM mode I sign Marner and Ehlers because why not. They would have 30 some million without Rust and Rakell. Make the playoffs next year and hope the other 3 picks are high in the draft.

McG - Sid - Marner
Ehlers - Geno - Kouvinen

And then also 4 first next year would be my dream fantasy.

I think it's pretty unlikely that you won't be getting massive offers for Rakell or Rust this off-season. Sure, if the offers are shit don't trade them just to trade them, but I think it's by far most likely that the offers for them will be good.

It's not just about acquiring futures for them, it's also about turning those futures into other young pieces to help the team in the long-run. In a perfect world, you send out all 3 of Rust, Rakell and Karlsson while adding at least 2 quality young NHLers (ideally Byram and a replacement top-9 winger) and additional futures. The goal should be to do something really aggressive like:

-Rakell to LA for Spence and pick #24
-Spence, Rust and pick #24 to Buffalo for Byram, Quinn and pick #39
-Karlsson to Carolina for Walker and a 2026 1st

You're basically turning Rakell, Rust and Karlsson for Walker, Byram, Quinn, pick #39 and a 2026 1st.
