Frankly - if that actually was their concern it's all a bit sad.

Placating Sid involved missing the playoffs for three straight years and not flipping Guentzel for a more roster ready piece, earlier? Going in on names like Hayes and not Tarasenko? I don't think placating Sid is at all what has gone on here. And if so - the Jarry/Graves moves....then my goodness.
Dubas tried to win in year 1. His big three moves were Karlsson, Jarry and Graves. Oh and Reilly Smith. All failed. Then they pivoted to the rebuild with the Guentzel trade.

In year 2 they took a much more half-hearted approach, but ended with trading Pettersson.

Then they really ripped the bandaid off and fired Sullivan.

The rebuild is happening all around Sid at this point. Happy/unhappy, who cares. They got him extended and now they can do what they want.

Man, these long summers with zero organizational progress toward anything positive are just rotting our f***ing brains.

Of course Geno should be re-signed if he wants to play an extra year to retire with Sid. This team sucks, Geno pretty much sucks and is only gonna get worse. It doesn't really matter.

We were at each other's throats for weeks over whether or not it'd be detrimental to the long term cause to sign Marner, but somehow a wizened Geno is gonna be an issue for the tank now? I dunno man, again, long off-season brainrot.

All this shit because of a totally fabricated article from bullshit artist Josh f***ing Yohe. :biglaugh:

I mean... I guess I'm just a little taken aback that there are still people here in 2025 that are like "nah man Geno is FAR from done!"

I get it... it sucks how this team has been handled the last 5-10 years and Malkin is one of my all time favorites, too. But last year wasn't even just the writing on the wall... it was in ten foot neon.

But like yeah sure... I officially walk back the "trade him whatever" shit. The legacy still means enough to me, the return would be trash and he's pretty terrible so he's helping with what the goal should be, anyway. See? I can admit when I'm wrong.

Yeah I mean, I don't think he's Jeff Carter cooked, but he's on the burner and has been simmerin'.

I've been enjoying the finals but yeah the draft can't come soon enough. I know it'll probably end up being a wetfart with Dubas not doing as much as we all want but there will be that nice little window of hoping that something cool will happen at least.

The Dinosaurs leaving can't come soon enough! They had their time, they're revered as a result, but it's time to turn the page.

Keep Malkin, also. Nothing matters, he's a legend, and you couldn't get anything in a trade for him anyway. If he wants another year at $4m, cool
20 years is enough, I love Geno, great player and an even better person! But we need to turn the page. I'm not even happy he's coming back for 25-26. It serves no purpose.

Man the entire lame NHL blogosphere is covering this Malkin thing more than the finals today. The penguins haven't been relevant for seven years and other fanbases and media still want to get their shots in regarding Malkin and Crosby

I know better than to listen to Steve Dangle and his idiot friends but they were saying how the Pens should trade Malkin to get a ‘haul’ for him. Dude is going to be 39 years old with two bad knees and declining play. Who in the hell is giving us a haul for him?! Lmao. We’d be looking at a second rounder and maybe a decent prospect.

I feel like all the Leafs failure is getting to Dangle's brainpan. I swear he used to be smarter/more interesting.

People probably say the same about me to be fair.

Everyone under sales the value of old stars on teams on a quest for a cup. Teams like Tor or Edm should have went all in on Sid or Geno, either guy would have pushed those teams to a cup. GM's are mostly morons in all sports. I will go to my grave knowing that between the period of 2019 thru 2024, I could have been the GM of all 3 PGH's sports team at the same time and would have had much more successful run than the combination of bozos' that those teams actually had.

Here's the thing: what is the Malkin succession plan? And sorry, I don't accept answers like, "who cares, we must tank woohoo" and other bullshit. No seriously, what is the plan for 2C?

If we are smart, we draft or trade for a young center to play on the third line this season, between Malkin and Novak (let's say). And then next season, you are better prepared for life without Malkin.

Malkin turns 39 next month. He is coming off the equivalent of a 60-point season. Missing 14 games was obviously a factor last season. Spending a big chunk of the season on PP2 was also a factor. The tire fire that was this whole team last season was also a factor.

We need a legitimate succession plan for this idea (moving on from Malkin post-2025-26) or else you bring him back. That is just reality.

To the people suggesting we need to move on from the dinosaurs, OK. Don't we need legitimate young centers to be able to do that? Our center depth chart right now is laughable. Many of us have been stressing this point for months.

Hell, if this man wants to stay beyond this season, we could use him on the fourth line and power-play minutes. Why not? Who is he holding back? Sam Poulin? Poulin can play wing if he finally figures things out. Ponomarev is signed for three seasons in the KHL now. Tristan Broz? Is he a fourth-line center? Maybe. Is he part of the future? Maybe. Could you squeeze him into this lineup if he shows something? Of course you can.

Until this draft is over, and we are comfortable with what we drafted from the center position, Malkin is still our best option behind Crosby. It may sound CRAZY to some. But the depth chart is what it is.

The plan needs to be - get a quality center prospect this draft.
