Frankly - if that actually was their concern it's all a bit sad.

Placating Sid involved missing the playoffs for three straight years and not flipping Guentzel for a more roster ready piece, earlier? Going in on names like Hayes and not Tarasenko? I don't think placating Sid is at all what has gone on here. And if so - the Jarry/Graves moves....then my goodness.
This team has absolutely found itself where it is by not rocking the boat and trying to placate Sid.

That doesn't mean they're targeting guys like Glass and Hayes *for* Sid. But they've been petrified into inaction for year by the risk of doing something wrong and pissing him off. The real catalyst of change happened out of their control with Jake deciding to break off talks and locking in on going to FA, thus forcing their hand to deal him.

A bit late, but the point of adding Spence would be to buy low on him, play him in a top-4 role and then sell high on him down the line if he performs well in the role. Top-4 puck moving RD have tremendous value and the Penguins have open minutes to play him in that role after EK is traded. He’s still pretty young so you don’t need to move him ASAP, but I think he’s a guy that you’d get a 1st back for in the future if he can be decent in a middle pair role. Kinda similar to how Buffalo once traded a 1st for a 24 year old Brandon Montour.

Purely in value, I think Rakell for Spence and pick #24 is pretty reasonable in value but I’m unsure If the Kings will want to trade their 1st this year with the draft in LA.

I’d be curious if Lindgren has suitors. If FA doesn’t go well maybe a 1 year deal for him here and then shipped out at the TDL?

Would be all for it but I figure someone gives him term. But yeah he’s the kind of DFD team they need for Letang and I’d rather gamble on him returning to form over trading for Hague, who’s also coming off a kinda poor season.

Is Rust enough to pull Isaac Howard and Conor Geekie with TB sending a bad contract back?

If Geno has a good season at his age and wants to play another year sign him…this is ridiculous if true…it’s not like we have top six centers better than him to play

Yep. If he wants to come back for one more year, let him. He and Sid should retire together.

It’s not surprising to me. Dubas has always wanted to come in and EA sports rebuild the team. He probably sees Malkin retiring as another step in that.

I hope so…that’d be a great return…but probably we’d have to add a pick or another prospect going back..I think the only “bad” contract Tampa has is Sherry, which is fine, but I don’t want long term with any vet contract returning

Geno should retire. Pretty simple. Team's gonna be ratf***ed for like 5-7 years. He's gassed and has said he wants to go back to play in Russia for a couple years before totally retiring. Makes no sense for him to keep limping along. /shrug

But if he wants to keep going for an extra year to retire alongside Sid, I don't really care one way or another. Doesn't hurt the rebuild, which is all that matters tbh.

they don’t really have a bad contract outside of Sheary who costs very little against cap once buried

I wouldn’t expect their fans to love it. But doesn’t seem crazy especially with how aggressive TB can be. Maybe a touch rich? But sounds like Rust may be in demand, and he has an affordable cap hit with zero protection.

Malkin should 100% retire after this year and I don’t blame Dubas for not wanting to re-sign him if he doesn’t want to retire.

I’d be saying the same thing if a 43 year old Crosby wanted to keep playing but his game had fallen off dramatically. Like call it a career, playing until 40 is a great career.

This is a semi tangent to an idea I saw: what if you trade Karlsson at full salary for a less return, but you use the saved retention slot on Rust or Rakell to beef up their value? Carolina has a boatload of cap space right now, so you could take a lesser offer from them for EK at full salary and use that saved retention slot to move Rust or Rakell at $2.5 million for a massive return.

Malkin will forever be every bit of a Penguins legend as Crosby is but yeah, I can’t blame Dubas for shutting the door on extending him. He’s going to be 40 years old, his game is declining and we’re in a rebuild. It’s time.

I also don’t think Malkin plays anywhere else either. This will probably be his last season I can imagine.

I don't blame Dubas if that is truly his angle but I'm not going to lie, if it actually comes to fruition and Geno wants to play but is told no I'll be a bit chafed when it happens. Fandom isn't always objective as much as we try to pretend it is.

That being said, I can't see him signing anywhere else in this league if that happens. He'll either give it a go across the pond or just take the hint and hang them up.

I think Sid would be chafed too. That situation might be the one thing that'd make Sid consider leaving.

Geno is fine and if he wants to play in the NHL next season they should sign him. 60 point pace with dogshit wingers on a dogshit team not even playing pp1 100% of the season. Not like we’re gonna be any decent either.

Oh and he’s one of the best 25 players to ever play hockey.

He was a 60 point guy last season at age 38, there’s no guarantee he’s that for 2026-2027 at age 40.

If the alternative to signing Geno is signing some Kevin Hayes stop gap, why wouldn't they just sign Geno? I see no harm in it.

If they somehow get a young stud and need the roster spot or sign McDavid to become good again, sorry, Geno.
