Hey don't discount other European leagues, like whatever bullshit D-tier Swiss league Kapanen's gonna be playing in next year.

If they keep Karlsson, something I hope to see them do is try to re-acquire another Pettersson type of LD to play with him until he's traded. He doesn't have to be traded this off-season, since he's under contract through the 2026-2027 season, but I absolutely no not want to see this defense again without a super reliable partner for him. I would plan on trading him before the 2026 draft to get a 2026 1st for him, but whether you do that in the 2025 off-season or at the 2026 draft doesn't make much of a difference with that pick.

Nick Hague sticks out as a great option for that, I'd try to get him to a 2-3 year deal and then trade him after a couple of seasons as a top-4 shutdown D. I figure he'd be cheaper to acquire than what you could trade him for in 2+ years. If they keep EK and run with:

Hague-Karlsson
Grzelcyk-Letang
Pickering-Timmins

I don't hate this defense, although I would rather get an Ian Cole style veteran for that 2nd pair LD spot that can eventually be pushed to the 3rd pair once Pickering is ready. I don't like Grzelcyk at all but I just figure he'll be back.

last game for Washington is in Pittsburgh. If Ovie hasn’t already broken the record, I say we take him out. Do not want that guy celebrating it in Pittsburgh. Other than that good for him. But not in Pittsburgh.

I remember making playoffs

WSH is for sure not building a better team than us... /s

Why be on a one year turnaround when you can be on a 3-5+ year concept of a plan rebuild on the fly....
But the Caps aren't gonna win anything so....

If we re-sign Grzecyk after the dog shit season he had here, I'm out.

Yeah, shoot man... Our trophy case is getting too full, too

At least Dubas can find a little room to stuff it with 2027 2nd round picks

f***in loser ass Capitals
Has nothing to do with us. The Caps are a paper tiger. They will not win the cup, They won't make the conference finals. Wouldn't surprise me if they lost in the 1st round.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I get the impression that the rangers would let the pick convey this year unless they’re picking in the top-10, maybe even slightly higher than 10th

That kinda meshes with what I've been assuming. They seem to want to turn it around quickly and I think having a 2026 1st to trade would be more valuable than a 2025 1st that isn't top-10. If they kept the 2025 1st, I'd expect them to attempt to use it to trade for win-now help.

The ideal scenario is that their 1st falls in at like 10th overall and they give it to the Penguins.

The data backs this up at 5 on 5.

From Natural Stat Trick, here's how Pickering fared with his most common partners:
POJ - 93:16 TOI, 60.26 CF%, 64.35 xGF%, 81.48 High Danger CF%, 25% GF
LETANG - 90:40 TOI, 44.38 CF%, 48.18 xGF%, 51.85 High Danger CF%, 37.50% GF
SHEA - 66:34 TOI, 53.60 CF%, 54.21 xGF%, 52.38 High Danger CF%, 57.14% GF
KARLSSON - 35:49 TOI, 43.94 CF%, 34.22 xGF%, 33.33 High Danger CF%, 100% GF (1-0)

Should be noted that Pickering had some pretty terrible PDO (or puck luck) during his stint, too. Even when he struggled with Letang, the puck ended up in the net more than it should have due to bad luck/bad goaltending.

That aside, he did much better away from the risk takers in Letang and Karlsson. With POJ and Shea he was above the line.

That's not bad, his averaged xGF is ~52% . Are we expecting him to do better than that with those partners?

The point was that he struggled in a top-4 role with Letang or Karlsson but did well in a 3rd pair role. The context of the discussion was that Pickering should start next year as their 3rd pair LD, ideally playing with Timmins.
