I think the Pens will try to improve this summer without committing term to older players.

But let's say for the sake of argument that Vilardi isn't enamored with the idea of staying in WPG...maybe a deal around Rakell is workable.

Hes waiver eligible if he doesn’t make the team and would absolutely get claimed. It’s a no brainer all around for him to sign a deal.

I don't see why he wouldn't just pick staying in the SHL over making that kind of gamble.

I don't think he's signing based on "if they don't want me, they'll waive me and someone else will probably claim me".

outside of being a competitive pro athlete wanting to be and play the best… I can think of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of reasons

Pens are gonna lie and “guarantee” him a spot regardless but he doesn’t really hold the cards here tbh

Pens would give up at least a 1st and 3rd for Valardi this year and possibly a 2nd next year. Pretty much the offer sheet and then extend the contract for close to 8 million for say 7 years. Me I draft a center O'Brien. maybe McQueen with the 1st pick. Pens then draft a center with 2026 pick with either Ranger top 10 or Pens top 10.

I would love to get Hallander back in the lineup. SHL is a darn good league and if he's dominating that, he may do just fine in the NHL in that 3rd line role.

But this is where having Acciari, Heinen, Hayes, Lizotte, and Novak with Tomasino as an RFA hurts a bit. If he's wanting to come over, I imagine it's for the NHL. He's not going to want to get jacked around playing in the AHL again. But if you can move one of the aforementioned, you have your slot for him and it saves you the need to go to FA.

McGroaty-Sid-Rust
Rakell-Malkin-Koivunen
Hallander-Novak-Tomasino
Heinen-Lizotte-Acciari
Hayes-Dewar

Seems like a logical group. Preference would be to send one or both of Heinen and Acciari out. Replace with Hayes and Pono or Poulin or Dewar.

I know people have mentioned Washington a bunch, but I think Dallas is a better example of a team that built a championship caliber contender quickly and without a ton of high picks. But even with doing that, it took them from 3 drafts to get Hintz (2015), Heiskanen (2017), Oettinger (2017) and Robertson (2017), and that's basically the best example I can see for a team doing that quickly.

I don't follow the rest of the NHL as hard core as I used to, but wouldn't the Kings be another example to try and emulate? They had Brown... Kopitar and Doughty are on their last legs. They are an honest hard working team.

Exactly. Acciari's 7th on TOI for forwars who have played more than 50 games. Dewar - Lizotte - Acciari isn't a terrible 4th line but the problem is Sully will play them like they're Cooke - Staal - Kennedy.
He's getting PK time, but should be getting very little at 5v5 and obviously nothing on the PP. You really don't want to see him above 10-12min per night. He should only be beating out bottom 6 players with no special teams role, and that should be 1-2 guys at most.

Well, right now they are "trying to make the playoffs" and are sitting 25th of 32.

I don't think it would take a ton more to actually "tank".
Um, right now they are not trying to make the playoffs. When they were giving up 4/5 goals a game earlier in the season they were and then traded away their top UFA piece says they were done trying to compete. They don't want to tank, but the optics of this season has them tanking.

Trying to make the playoffs they are adding top 6 depth not more bottom 6.

Looks good to me. And this is why I don't think we need to go hard after UFA forwards, unless Marner somehow falls in our lap. The depth is there and you could always add another top 6 W at the deadline. What we need is defensemen. Plural.

I could definitely be wrong because I honestly don’t know how aggressive this team will be this offseason, but I’m skeptical they go into next year with 3 unproven guys in their top-9 between Koivunen, McGroarty and Hallander. 2 seems to be the most I can see them doing, with my guess being Koivunen on L2 and either McGroarty or Hallander on L3. I don’t know that Koivunen has much of a reason to go back to the AHL, but I definitely think McGroarty still has room to grow in the AHL.

They’ll probably sign some low level FA similar to Beauvillier that can slide into the top-6 for half a season, do okay and then get traded for a 3rd at the deadline to open up a spot for McGroarty. Probably end up with:

UFA-Crosby-Rust
Koivunen-Malkin-Rakell
Hallander-Novak-Tomasino
Dewar-Lizotte-Acciari
Heinen-Ponomarev

Or something like this to start.

mcg could definitely change that projection, he’s got another 7 games or whatever. but yeah, koivunen i don’t see how he isn’t in the top 6 next year, mcg, i could see going back to wbs

Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if they move Heinen over the summer, even if it would end up taking attaching one of their excess future mid-round picks.

I think they’d probably want to but it’s a question if anyone would want him.

I think Hayes is gone fairly easily for like a 4th/5th, but I’m not sure Heinen is as easy to move. They’re going to have some vets in depth roles, I figure they’d just replace Heinen with another vet if they traded him.

Right, so, Hayes is better, which means easier to move, but preferable to keep over Heinen, which is why if push comes to shove we might add to get rid of him.

I assume Dubas will try to compete (within reason) next two seasons.

I guess the way I look at it, Heinen or Hayes can be that low level FA fill in, and they're already on the roster. Not to mention Tomasino can bump into the top 6.

Heinen isn’t that because he kinda sucks, he’s just an extra forward that costs a lot for the role. He’s a 4th liner or 13th forward.

Another Beavillier is the minimum I’d expect them to add in free agency.
