I hope he ends up being a player for us. I like his personality. Seems like a good kid.
What irks me about Sullivan is he insists that he's just trying to put out a lineup that gives the Penguins the best chance to win.
And like when we were a win now team, that made sense. But we're not that any longer. It might be beneficial to the team long term to put younger players out there and let them learn and grow through their mistakes.
It's time for the Pens to admit what they are and not just throw out lineups that are trying to grind themselves into an 8th seed. Take a short term step back to take a bigger step forward long term.
I don't expect fans to do a damn thing! lolSo you expect fans to pay $100 or more to go see a team with just Sid and Geno play with bums? This is an entertainment business and Rakell and Rust with Sid is money. I rememeber when this team was unwatchable and i do not want to go back to that. Keep the first line together and build out from there. Heck i rather watch Rakell Sid Rust with rest of the roster up from WBS than watch Sid with 2 scrubs.
Olli has been pretty good as a coach and seems to be growing in that area of his career.View attachment 1002023
Not sure Id take this guy over Mitch Love. This team could use some McLovin

Olli can be assistant to McLovinOlli has been pretty good as a coach and seems to be growing in that area of his career.
For his record in Liiga, he went 101-67-6 across 3 seasons in his first big role as a head coach that wasn't some youth team in Florida. He's now with Timra in the SHL and coaching Hallander who is having an incredible season (53pts in 51 games, 26 goals, Hallander is 2nd in the league right now for points and goals) under Jokinen's coaching and he's 27-21-1-3 there. He's far more qualified to be a coach in the NHL than blokes here realize.
Yes and this is my biggest issue with him, that he doesn't understand how to use his lineup to the best of its ability and that also starts with his lack of care for scouting the players best usage before joinign the Penguins which he's outright admitted, that he doesn't care how they were used, they will use them how they fit best in his line-up and usage, lol. So he picks the wrong combinations and then you have them floundering in the worst system that he claims he's changed but its an absolute shit show year after year. What irks me about Sullivan is he insists that he's just trying to put out a lineup that gives the Penguins the best chance to win.
The team wants fans to believe they are still in a win now mode and also wanting to get younger with a coach that consistently chooses the vets over youth and then begrudgingly plays youth only to punish them immediately while veterans continue to get a free pass for a very long time. He also has a very low opinion of the Penguins farm system to the point FSG literally had asked him and that anyone they hire to go through Sullivan for how he wanted it run and what not.And like when we were a win now team, that made sense. But we're not that any longer. It might be beneficial to the team long term to put younger players out there and let them learn and grow through their mistakes.

We'll be lucky to be 8TH OA with this abomination of a coach trying to win meaningless games. He's sick!!!!!!!!Got a realistic shot at 4th last. Move Acciari and Nieto to PP1. Give Sid a maintenance month.
Tell EK and Letang to pinch at every opportunity, no matter how bad it looks.
With any luck Jarry and Ned keep playing like their early season form and we just keep losing games like 8-4 or something. Let the rookies get some points. Let Sid get some points. But get some big losses.Got a realistic shot at 4th last. Move Acciari and Nieto to PP1. Give Sid a maintenance month.

Yeah, we’re going to need to do a better job out-tanking the Bruins…You have to respect the Bruins for throwing all these games! Less than 25 shots in each of the last nine games. Reminds me of the '83-84 Penguins.
Not us though
Sullivan: LETS COMPETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, if you watch their games they're just abysmal with puck management, trying to generate chances, constantly caught out of position, getting very few good looks at the net. They are the epitome of tanking. If you're a Bruins fan you gotta love it! Their GM traded away some good pieces to add for the future and help the tank now. Much respect to them!Yeah, we’re going to need to do a better job out-tanking the Bruins…
We’re not getting a lot of help …
If Sullivan just keeps trotting out Grz-Letang for 26 min a night, and Jarry, we should be able to go toe to toe with the Bruins tank, no matter how unintentional it is lolSeriously, if you watch their games they're just abysmal with puck management, trying to generate chances, constantly caught out of position, getting very few good looks at the net. Not us, we hold onto some of our garbage, we try to COMPETE in meaningless games that stifle our ability for future years. It's just mind numbingly stupid!
The Bruins have this down to a science. I mean as soon as they get an open look they'll pass the puck, no joke. They may not win another game all season, and they make it look impossible to win. Tonight was one of the most unremarkable games I had the displeasure of watching. We're talkin ineptitude of an unfathomable level here. And the Wings weren't much better. I actually feel bad for ABC!If Sullivan just keeps trotting out Grz-Letang for 26 min a night, and Jarry, we should be able to go toe to toe with the Bruins tank, no matter how unintentional it is lol
Don't see where Poulin fits TBH. He's not going top 6, but I'm pretty sure McGroarty and Koivunen are up to see if they can be. Bottom 6 is a logjam still with Hayes, Heinen, Acciari all blocking, and Pono needing to clear. The Ponomarev waiver argument is a valid point. I still believe Poulin has been kept in WBS for the most part because he's considered a leader and stabilizing force for a pretty young team. They're not going to learn anything about him in eight games at the NHL level that they don't already know, whereas giving McGroarty and Koivunen a little bit of a run could be more beneficial.
So while I get what you're saying, I do think they're going to give Poulin a long look next year - he's under contract - and give him a chance to seize a spot. If not ahead of Ponomarev, I would at least put him ahead of Hallander, who we have no idea if he's truly coming over, what his contract would look like (he's an unsigned RFA) or what the organization has offered to him in terms of opportunity.
I think the Beauvillier types are Hayes and Heinen. We're shifting gears towards youth now.I think the only young guys they'll assume have spots going into next year are McGroarty, Koivunen and Hallander. And Hallander is more because you won't get him to leave the SHL to sign with the Penguins if he's not being at least first dibs on a bottom-6 spot.
I think they will be adding one or two Beauvillier style UFAs to give them insurance in case McGroarty or Koivunen struggle, but the rest of the forward lineup will be filled out with what they have.
Just treat Crosby like Malkin and this team will draft 3rd overall.Got a realistic shot at 4th last. Move Acciari and Nieto to PP1. Give Sid a maintenance month.

They do this near the end every year, it's basically their only "look, see we use youth!" moment for Sullivan. Because you know Sullivan is never going to use the youth correctly, he will try it for a game at most or a few shifts and change it back to playing the vets a lot more. The rope is super short for the youth, on a team rebuilding/retooling, that should never be the case. It's the kind of shit Torts keeps doing and he gets fired for it, but Sullivan can do it and the blame goes to the players instead.I think the Beauvillier types are Hayes and Heinen. We're shifting gears towards youth now.
That's a large part of it, and also an excellent point. We don't aim for the kinds of players who who would also need that kind of development, plus, as others pointed out, despite his work as a development coach in Chicago, Sullivan didn't really develop anyone from the Pens, just inherited a very good draft class on the cusp of breaking into that NHL.Who was the last talented guy the Pens have had since Jake? It's a pretty short list. Guentzel was drafted in 2013.
Since then, here are the "skilled" players taken in the draft:
Kapanen - flamed out in multiple organizations because he's more interested in clapping cheeks.
Sprong - dropped in the draft, can't stick with any organization in the NHL because he doesn't want to put in effort when he doesn't have the puck
Addison - skilled defenseman briefly popped with the Wild but now isn't even on an NHL contract at age 24. When even San Jose passes on signing you, it's not a good sign
Hallander - Some skill, always profiled as a middle six player at best, jury is still out if he really does come back over
Poulin - Some skill, always more of a power forward, looking like a bottom six player if he ends up cracking the NHL roster after some pretty substantial setbacks with mental health and physical health
The rest are guys still developing (Broz, Pickering, McGroarty, Koivunen) or guys who never had a chance or goalies.
Player development hasn't been great, but the far bigger issue has been player acquisition and identifying skilled players to select. For all he did to bring the team Cups, Rutherford's drafts are terrible.
My pet peeve with this franchise is why we keep re-acquiring players Sullivan hates. This has happened with multiple GMs and it just boggles my mind why we spend resources on these guys. POJ. Kapanen. Heinen.Tbh I keep forgetting that Danton Heinen is on this team.
Sullivan clearly hates him so I wouldn’t bet on him being back next year.
Trading away a nothing player like Glass gives me hope that they will try to trade players like Heinen, Hayes and Acciari. It seems they finally understood that these type of players don’t help the team and a non scoring bottom 6 isn’t the way to construct a team.My pet peeve with this franchise is why we keep re-acquiring players Sullivan hates. Like why? Just promote from within, it's not like we're going to miss Danton Heinen's contributions at all.
McGroarty is not going to be on the top line with Sid. That line isn't changing.Don't see where Poulin fits TBH. He's not going top 6, but I'm pretty sure McGroarty and Koivunen are up to see if they can be. Bottom 6 is a logjam still with Hayes, Heinen, Acciari all blocking, and Pono needing to clear.
McGroarty Crosby Rust
Koivunen Malkin Rakell
Ponomarev Novak Tomasino
Dewar Lizotte Acciari
Hayes Heinen
I think that's the group on opening night. Gotta move one of the bottom three (Acciari, Hayes, Heinen) to free a spot. Is Poulin killing penalties this year?
