  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

At the end of the day, if we are to be aggressive in the off season regarding UFA and also trades ( moving picks for bodies ) like KD said at his presser, than I'm ok with keeping and starting the season with Raks and Rust. EK I'm sure is as good as gone, he will want out in my opinion. The hardest thing will be telling Letang that going forward, he is a #5-6 defenseman on this team at best!
If they keep them all, I'm definitely not okay with passing on 3 extra 1sts when the prospect pool should be a top priority.
I will never support that.

I hope Dubas does his best Doug Armstrong and uses some of our newly acquired draft capital on an offer sheet or two.

A LOT of interesting options out there.

Dubas should go full heel and offer sheet Knies.

Not a bad idea.. but for Knies to keep the compensation at 1st rd pick + 3rd rd pick it'll need to be between

$4,580,917 - $6,871,374

So let's say Pens sign Knies to a deal that's at a 6.8M AAV are you willing to likely fork over a possible top 10 pick in 2026 for Matthew Knies? Maybe, maybe not.

I think a better choice may be a cap strapped team like Vegas, with Nic Hague. (Vegas has space but has Eichel coming up and has to re-sign Adin Hil as well.

I have no problem giving Hague 6.8M AAV and forking over a 1st for him. He would be the perfect top pairing LHD for PIT. He is 26 and entering his prime

Mavrik Bourque in DAL is another one.

A 4.5m cap hit for him would be one second round pick and I think that's worth it. I don't think Dallas will match that.

2 X 4.5M AAV is something I would do.

I think the easier bet than an offersheet would be just trading picks for the player. It would likely cost a bit more than the compensation, but I think there is extra value there between being able to trade non-Penguins picks (or fewer Penguins picks) and maintaining good relationships between GMs by not using offersheets.

I think offersheets should only be used when a team isn't willing to negotiate in a trade. I'd offer Dallas one of the Penguins 2nds that isn't their own for Bourque, but if they won't take that, then I'd throw an offersheet with a 2nd round compensation at him.

I'm not sure why Karlsson would only get a 2nd back when Jones brought back Knight and a 1st.

Jones was apparently only allowing trades to Dallas or Florida and Dallas wasn't interested.

I think he gets sent to Carolina at about a 7M cap hit, he slides in nicely next to Slavin and replaces Burns.

Karlsson (7M) to CAR for a 1st rd pick (DAL) + Ryan Suzuki

You have no problem giving a 10 point a year D-man $7MM a year???? You should have serious problems giving a 10 point D-man $7MM a year!

Jones is younger and is perceived as more responsible 2way player.

More importantly he was 30 when he was dealt. Karlsson gonna be 35

A 2nd is not that far off from an uber late 1st either.

I think we are going to be rather limited on Karlsson landing spots. Dallas made sense but they just brought in Rantanen. They are already at $88mil for next year. Florida just got Jones. Carolina still exists as a potential spot but a quick scan of teams that I think he would go to, not many realistic options. Unless we are willing to take some bad deals. Carolina has Burns going away and a gluttony of cap space. They're going to want a "deal" on him which I'm not sure makes sense for us. Hell, I would take Morrow for Karlsson @ 50% and call it a day.

Detroit and Columbus have everything needed to make a deal but I don't think EK would go there.

This team does a lot of things that doesn't make sense. They're in a rush to give Sid 1 more shot.

But I hope you're right, for the team's sake. It would be crazy to actively avoid the McKenna sweepstakes.
There's merit in trying to build something around Sid. He's still performing at an elite #1C level, and he'll likely be better over the next few years than anyone we draft will ever be even if we are lucky enough to get a lotto pick. We'll see who gets turned over and how we leverage our assets over the next year.

McKenna looks like he'll be great but a) he's a winger, and b) we shouldn't deliberately sabotage a whole season just for a chance to draft him - that mindset can infect an organization.

I'm not sold on McKenna being the next generational player. I was 100% sold on Bedard doing it and look at his struggles since entering the NHL.

WHL is looking like it's maybe a mirage of a league when it comes to production. I'd be highly focused on drafting NCAA / USHL players and Russians given where the league is trending.

I would only take that course if there was a realistic shot at winning the Cup while Sid was still here. In my view there isn't, so I'm against sacrificing futures, hoping for a Cinderella run. I believe in making high percentage management decisions, especially when the future of the team is at stake.
I don't consider him elite anymore either. Don't like handing out that term easily.
He's likely to finish with 90 points or less. Mac is gonna get over 120. He's currently 28th in P/PG, and he's not gonna get 40 goals. Plus Sid's defensive game is declining.

He's had pretty excellent conditions to produce as well. Rust and Rakell have been super, and he's been with them the majority of the year. He plays with EK a lot, gets 68% O-zone starts, and is part of a 9th ranked PP. Plus he gets put out there in all ENG situations.

Sid's obviously doing brilliantly for his age and all that, but with expected regression next year and so little around him set up right now, this project would just take longer than he has left imo.
There's all these terrible contracts weighing the team down too.

McKenna or one of the other top picks can give the team a decade+ of excellence. They can incentivize quality free agents to come here, and prevent players from putting us down on their no-trade lists.
It just makes a lot more sense to me to try and get one of them and to start building a new, prolonged window.
I just don't see this team taking out multiple top teams in best of sevens in the next 2-3 years, and I'm against wasting more of this organization's assets and time. There's already been so much of that since 2019.
