I know the Rangers pick is top-13 protected, but I wonder if they’d consider trading a pick at like 10th overall to guarantee they keep their 2026 1st. Basically go to the Penguins and say “we’ll give you 10th overall this year if we can get our 2026 1st back”.

That said, if they were willing to do that, I don’t know why their pick wasn’t just top-5 protected rather than top-13 protected.

I don't see how any moves are pandering to Sullivan, and I don't even like Sullivan.

We're in a "retool" now, selling off good players for futures, and the roster is bad. What part of that is Sulivan pandering? He sure as hell didn't want Guentzel moved.
It is a fair point, but I look at the call-ups and just think most of these guys are Sullivan guys. I am pretty sure Dubas saw an opportunity to bring in two depth guys he likes in Dewar and Timmins, so he took it. Dewar as the fourth-line LW I actually really like. Of course, Sullivan has him playing on Malkin's line. Timmins is probably an ideal third-pairing RD on a team that has Karlsson and Letang. So naturally Sullivan plays him or Letang on their off side even though Kolyachonok and Letang were solid together. Just as Pickering-Letang was solid as a pairing earlier this season.

And then there are the decisions to re-sign Ryan Shea (not a bad deal, per se, but was it necessary at this time? This is a depth defenseman that Sullivan used 20+ minutes on several occasions before he got hurt. And no doubt Sullivan will use a ton again in the future), as well as the decision NOT to trade Grz and Acciari. I can buy that Dubas was not being offered what he wanted, but I think it is also safe to assume Dubas did not necessarily want to piss his coach (boss?) off by dealing them.

And then there are the call-ups. We have a clear need for a top-six LW right now, everybody sees it. Instead, we keep recalling Nieto, call up Koppanen, earlier we brought up Imama and Bemstrom...Dubas talked recently about getting the prospects a few games here down the stretch. Well, we're waiting. Meanwhile, they took away the baby Pens' best offensive player (but a non-NHL prospect in Bemstrom) for no reason whatsoever. And we still have no idea whether any of our prospects will stick next year. Pickering was the only one Sullivan seemed to like, and even he was sent down never to be seen again. Brunicke had a tremendous camp, and probably deserved 9 games to start the season. We did not do that, either.

So maybe it's not "pandering" to Sullivan per se, but Dubas needs to stop thinking like his head coach with his moves/decisions.

They can choose if it’s top 13. Anything lower and the Pens automatically get it. I’d find it hard to believe they’d pass it to next year if it was 10th.

From Vensel’s article on Timmins today…

“Evgeni Malkin was back on the top power play at Saturday’s practice in Cranberry. Kevin Hayes was dropped down to the second unit.”

lol…it only took this jabroni coach half the season and being out of the playoffs to do this…

If Geno wanted to be on PP1, he should have been born in Massachusetts, not Magnitogorsk.

Say we get 7 and Rags give us 10, I wonder if those two picks are enough to get you to 4 or 5? For argument sake, let's say it IS - would we do that?

Or would we walk with Eklund/Desnoyers/McQueen and someone like Carter Bear?

I mean, a future 2nd line could easily be McGroarty-Desnoyers-Bear.

Caps fan coming in peace, and referencing the below post/article:
Most of us have been very pleased with Anthony Beauvillier. I think a lot of Caps fans only looked at his stats and weren't all that impressed, but he has shown a lot of skill in his limited time so far and seemingly fit into the locker room really well. He's a hard worker and his speed is a real weapon, though he doesn't have the best shot from range in the world. He's been a valuable contributor and there's some chatter in HFCaps land to try and get him signed to an extension.

The 2nd was still a high price to pay for him, so great job by Dubas to get that from DC. As of now, it looks like a win-win trade. Hopefully the pick turns into a good piece for the Pens. (Though, I also hope that good piece doesn't become a major contributor to a contending team in Pittsburgh until after the Caps stop contending. To be fair and honest..)

(Eller has been .. mostly fine. Does what was needed, which is provide experience and stability, even if his overall positive goal differential impact is limited. For the Caps, their "4th line", centered by Nick Dowd, actually plays more than their 3rd with Eller. But Eller is such an experienced veteran, his true impact will be best measured by what he can do in the playoffs.)

lol….if only…putting Sullivan on here over Lavi is a thing…hopefully he’s right

I'm confident three of those coaches will be job hunting this summer. The other is a top 2-3 coach in the league, and you can't fire a guy like that!

This is a protected pick from 13 on up to 1. If Rangers finish 14th Pens get the pick. Now is there a window for the Rangers to decide to send the pick say at 12 to the Pens thinking they want to keep their pick for 2026. I guess so. But at 14 or higher Pens get the pick. Would I prefer next years pick which a good chance it is better yes.

Unfortunately for Beauvillier, I think a lot of posters here were expecting him to fill the hole left by Guentzel and when it became immediately apparent that he wasn't, they soured on him. But I appreciated his game most nights. I thought he regularly played with speed and forechecked well while adding a goal with significantly more regularity compared to others in our bottom 6. The one thing that I loved with him, especially early, was his shot generation. He was constantly in the right place to get feeds from Sid and Rust. Just wish more would have gone in. Glad you are happy with him! We are happy with the 2nd.

Sacco out at the same time Sullivan might leave? Seems like destiny!

1. No. It is better to get 2 in that scenario.
2. I'd be on the fence between O'Brien and Bear as the Rangers pick but probably land on O'Brien.

RE: 2, it might depend on who we take with our 1st. If we get Frondell or Desnoyer, I might take Bear. If we get Eklund, then JOB.

Agree…he needs off the top line playing 20+ min a night…

He's only in year 3 of 6 of a 35+ contract. The only way to not get burned by this contract going forward is LTIR. This contract could literally turn out to be one of the worst contracts per on ice value this team has ever offered.

If it was me, and I was given the choice of paying him to play at 6.1/yr for 3 years, or pay him not to play at 1.38/yr for 6 years.... Pack it up and let the young guys take his spot.
